Mark,
Sorry, I too haven't heard of them. I had a hard time getting a clear picture of them from your picture. I will start looking them up. What is 'the hippy freak out sites'. Sounds colorful but don't want to go there.

Mark,
Just looked it up. Holy crap on a stick. It contains drugs. Now I feel stupid. Looks a lot like the cactus I got seeds from in Clear Water, Florida. It is called Cereus peruvianus. Also from Peru. Mine is the only one I saw that has a twist in it. Some not all the stems.

And those san pedro cactus, 'Trichocereus Peruvianus'. Who would have guessed that. Who would have tried it first and why? Copied from text;
The San Pedro cactus contains a number of alkaloids, including the well-studied chemical mescaline (0.21–1.8%), and also 3,4-dimethoxyphenethylamine, 4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenethylamine, 3-hydroxy-4,5-dimethoxyphenethylamine, 4-hydroxy-3,5-dimethoxyphenethylamine, anhalonidine, anhalinine, hordenine, tyramine, and 3-methoxytyramine.[citation needed]

Cactus phsycotropic should never be considered a recreational drug. I have freinds that are part of a native tribe's hiearchy up in northern california, they describe the use of mescaline containing cactus as a "ritual to cleanse the spirit with powerful medicine". Ingesting this stuff causes vomiting along with a state of mind and body that can be "terrifying, unless properly guided." While they use the more commonly known (AND ILLEGAL WITHOUT RELIGIOUS PERMITS I MIGHT ADD) Lophophora williamsii 'Peyote', they both contain mescaline which is what you want to avoid.

So think of it as ancient religious soul medicine that you never, ever want to take. At least not without the proper tribal elders watching you anyway.
