I have a friend that has to dig up several of his daylillies to put up a garage. Can he just let these plants dry and store them this winter or does he have to pot them up while he decides where he wants them next year?

I agree He should pot them up but put them where they get some protection from the weather if he is in a cold climate. They usually don't freeze but if they aren't in the ground they are more likely to suffer damage.
