My Gardenimport bulb order arrived! I had to go fetch it from the gas station 10 miles away in Mansfield, where packages that won't fit into mailboxes end up, but that only added one extra day to the delivery time. Thanks to the mail tracking system I know that the package was mailed on Thursday in Toronto, sorted in Mississauga on Friday, forwarded to the Shelburne post office on Monday, and available for pick-up in Mansfield on Tuesday. And the package was neither crushed nor cooked. Yay, Canada Post! I planted the bulbs this afternoon.

Must be something in the air! My little order from the much maligned Michigan Bulb Co. arrived today (well, at least most of it--the hyacinths will be along in a week or so). Everything looks just fine, nice solid looking bulbs. We'll see how they do. Going to plant them tomorrow since it's raining today. I'm really just sticking my toe in with bulbs. I'm thinking about putting them in among the irises. Does that seem like a reasonable thing to do, for both the irises and the tulips?

Hurray! June! Isn't it nice to get them planted before it gets so cold!

Woofie, will you plant them far enough apart so when they both increase it won't be a problem? Crowding would be the only problem I can think of. But I bet they would look beautiful together.

Well, it's a small bed, but the irises are new as well, so it will take them at least 2 or 3 years to get too rowdy. Just thought they'd be a good combination since neither wants a whole lot of water. I'm experimenting with a new area on the property, so it will be interesting to see how things do there.

Only if it ends up looking good! Hilarious! It was only supposed to be 3 irises, but the place I ordered from sent a bunch of extras. Kind of hard to complain about that, eh? But I ended up having to find a different spot for them, hence the new bed. It's really small, but I figure if they do well, I can expand it easily since it's in an open area. I haven't had much luck with irises in the past, but this is in a drier, better-drained area so got fingers crossed!

I find that irises expand quite fast when they get established. I planted bulbs and irises in a south-facing flowerbed along the side of my garage. The pic, taken in 2007, shows yellow Tulip batalini, purple Iris pumila, with Muscari and a bearded Iris beyond them. It only took a couple of years for the irises to start growing over the top of the bulbs. Fortunately, it's quite easy to remove iris rhizomes, as they are shallow-rooted.

OMG, Margaret, not the white stuff! I can't bring myself to say the "s" word. I'm still reeling from the arrival of frost. I don't have my driveway markers installed yet.

No snow until the bulbs are in!
We are going below freezing at night ,but daytime is fine for planting.
Today, I must cut trees back so I can get under to plant bulbs.
This is a lot of work, but I am hoping that when spring comes---it will be worth it.

Cross posted, June.
Most of the bulbs are going outside.
There were 15 hyacinth bulbs in the package from Roosengardes, and those I will pot up for indoors.
Hyacinths are somewhat "iffy" here when planted outdoors.
The hyacinth bulbs have been tossed in the bottom of the frig to chill.

I will for sure take pictures in the spring.
It is a lot of work, especially where the quack grass has to be dug out first.
I have a gardening stool/kneeler. But yesterday I did not take it out in the yard with me.
I got down in the dirt to place the bulbs---but then had a time of it getting back up.
The kneeler /stool is handy as I can push myself back up using it.
My birthdays are catching up with me!

I've been wishing I'd gotten one of those kneelers. Got lots of other goodies, like my nifty Tractor Scoot, but a kneeler would be nice to have, too.
