I thought this was a red Maple tree, now I.m not sure. And it just shot up a really long leader branch that looks funky and I don't know if I should prune it or not? I don't really know much about trees.

Okay, thanks. Now, should I prune off that extra long top?

We prune ours after the leaves drop so you can see the main branches to get the correct shape you want. But yes, that shooter should go.

Then may be just try rooting the cutting? It would be a shame to "waste" a start of a tree as lovely as yours.
