I keep seeing late summer blooming flowers in my area of west central florida near Crystal River. I have seen them for years, but can't seem to find the name, and of course when I think of posting the question here, I fail to remember to take pics.

The plants resemble long stalky yellow daisy type flowers that grow in very loose clusters. Predominately seen in shaded areas. Bright yellow flowers about 2 -3 inches across. Grows in large patches that I have mostly seen.

Any ideas of what they are without me thinking ahead and getting pics?

Another possibility is "Leavenworth's Tickseed" (Coreopsis leavenworthii):

Look forward to seeing photo's ... I'm sure someone will be able to give an exact ID of the plant once photo's are available.

Forgot to say; if you can get pic's of the leaves, stem and blooms that would be a big help too.

Tiffany: That's a good possibility too as it's in bloom in this part of Florida as well.

Leosdad: Check out some of the photo's in the database for Sunroots (Helianthus tuberosus)

okay folks, here are three (3) pics of the plants. They are about 5 feet tall, and well, you can see them now.

At that height, it definitely looks like Starry Rosinweed (Silphium asteriscus) At the Botanical Gardens where I volunteer we have some 6' tall in bloom now. I have one popping up in my yard and another popping up in a container.

Thank you Lin. I have seen these before last year after my return to Florida and now that I live in a very quiet part of a very small town, I would love to have these sporadically growing in my back yard along the river. Lots of shade and spots of sun, so I think they would do well. Looking forward to spring and next summer to see how they will do. Thank U again. All of you.

If you're certain of the ID, it would be nice to add one or two of these pics to the database. I notice that the photos there don't seem to include pictures of the entire plant.

You are welcome; I hope I identified it correctly; from what I can see of the leaves and stems in your photo it sure looks like my plant. I forgot to say though ... feel the leaves if you get a chance; they have a sort of rough, prickly feel.

Here's more info about Starry Rosinweed: http://meadowbeautynursery.com...

Well, maybe you should disregard my ID as the more research I do and the more photo's I look at, I think my plant (and the one in your photo) is NOT the Starry Rosinweed but rather the Swamp Sunflower (Helianthus angustifolius): Swamp Sunflower (Helianthus angustifolius) another Florida native.

Try to touch the leaves and see if they feel kinda prickly ... not like thorns but they feel sand paperish to me. Green Grin!

I agree with Lin on swamp sunflower. Mine are in bloom now...some over my head. I started with 3 plants gotten at a swap and now they fill a 4 foot by 8 foot bed and that's after giving a LOT away. A very pretty patch of sunshine Lovey dubby

Ginger: I'm so glad you popped in here with confirmation because I wasn't real sure. I planted my Swamp Sunflower in the ground today and it's pouting.
