Thread OP

I've noticed these small saplings in different areas on a property in Ottawa Michigan. I'm wondering what they are. Anybody know?

If it is woody, than it looks like Cercis canadensis (Redbud).

Of course, in the first pic, the one in the background is something else.

I agree, Redbud. I have one that grew up this year near my townhouse. They're very pretty.

I ditto! A squirrel or bird planted one for me a couple years ago…I nurtured it along, and look at it now! Not bad for a freebie!

I've never tried from seed. I'll look for seedlings...they pop up here and there.

Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing Hey, if I ever find something like that ... I'll gladly share! I keep saying that I want to win the lottery but I never buy tickets! My best friend keeps telling me that I can't win if I don't play. When I do buy a ticket it's always the same numbers I've used from day one and my husband keeps telling me if our numbers ever come in on a winning ticket and you didn't buy one you are going to be really upset. But, I still rarely ever remember to buy a lottery ticket. Sticking tongue out

Seed pods of red bud look like narrow, flat edible pea pods 1.5-3 inches long. It's doubtful there are any left hanging on the tree. They would be certainly be dried up, but the seeds would still be good.

It is recommended to scarify the hard seed coat before giving 2 months (more is fine) of cold moist treatment (stratification). This breaks the internal dormancy of the embryo and allows growth when warm temps return in spring.

I'm going to try to remember to drive by our rental house next spring to see if I can catch any seedpods on the tree there:
