Does anyone know what daylily was the first registered with teeth?

I would think it would be one of Reckamp's. Techny Spider was the first one I grew that had teeth, but it did not perform well. I don't grow any of the ones intro'd since Bass Gibson, but Rice's Crown of Creation is very toothy and does super here. Registered as a double, but it has never doubled for me, and I never saw it bloom double at John's. If you do a search here in this cubit for "crown" I am sure I have posted pics of it. I am posting from an iPad now and don't have access to my photos.

Brother Charles Reckamp had glittery edges and teeth in his edges a long time ago.

Lyle - I love the site. My biggest dream is a pure white self with neon glow in the dark green teeth or big red teeth.

Juli - I'm wondering if it was Recamp too and my neighbor says Gossard but she can't back that up.

If your talking registration dates, I am positive Techny Spider was registered before any of Jamie's. Crown of Creation was probably before any of Jamie's toothy ones... But not sure on that. There is a link to the data base on the right pane of the cubit. iPad won't allow me to search the database but later I will see what I can find if you don't get an answer when I start up my Mac for the day.

I am not a Reckamp expert by a long shot - only grew that one. But, I know I have heard discussion that the modern glitter gold edges can be traced back to his lines, as do teeth. They may go back to other lines as well.

Looks like Jamie's first intro was in 2000. In 2001 he intro'd a toothy one out of Startle.

I remember when Startle came out. Benz was using it hot and heavy and Shirley Farmer was SO EXCITED when John gave her some pollen, and later a piece of the flower. Since Jamie and John were friends that is probably why Jamie became familiar with Startle early on.

Crown of Creation (Rice-J., 1998) --- also was registered before Jamie registered anything. Let me see if I can find the close up of it's teeth...
I found one, but it is not one of my best shots. My photos are a mess - my old mac died and my photos are all on an external drive - thank goodness I had all my files backed up, but I never had them organized well. Before I copy everything to the new computer, I am determined to organize, name, and TAG my photos!

I grew several of Whatley's but I have never managed to even see Yuma. I have heard it is a great flower.

if your dream daylily is white with neon greenish teeth, check out LACHLAN NICOLE AGIN at Maryott's. It's really a light yellow with brighter teeth, but it's a start. I've just become a fan of Linda Agin's daylilies, and Maryott's has a super collection. Expensive, but aren't they beautiful?

Hello everyone. I'm back and really appreciate your responses. You guys know your teeth like the big bad wolf. I certainly learned a lot of information in 2 minutes. Have to admit that I'm unfamiliar with Whatley and checked my spreadsheet and don't have any of his cultivars. So this is another hybridizer I need to get familiar with. But first I'll probably spend a whole month catching up on all the posts on the daylilyblogger. I'm loving it.

Betja, I bought LNA last year and hopefully it will have FFOE this year. But I think it does have a yellowish cast to it.

Kathy, while the thought is wonderful, and appreciated, it is not needed. I used to be able to grow thousands of seedlings and hundreds of cultivars. Now I have a couple small beds of my favorites over the years. I enjoy helping others learn, and passing on any info rattling around in this dusty brain.

Actually, it was quite fun! And, I learned what Yuma looked like. I have heard the name for many years. Wish I had grown it. I loved the Whatley intros I grew. I think the only one I still grow is Maple Hues. Solar Music, Ram, Volvar, Buttercream... So many really great ones. The daylily world lost a great one when he passed on. When I was still putting on the Region 2 Symposium with Curt Hanson, we had Oacie as a speaker, and I was able to sit in on several very interesting conversations he was involved in that weekend.

One reason I still grow Maple Hues is that it looks fabulous with balloon flower "Fuji Blue" planted with it so that the balloon flower grows into the scapes. A knockout combination that happened quite by accident years and years ago.

I have about 25 seedlings of mine that I probably should have named, and more than one have a Whatley as a parent.

This all has m wondering where Reckamp started. What did he start with?? It was near WW2 when he began but I have not found anything that indicates the base of his creations. Has anyone else??

Was it Little Chief in 1955?

Yes, I discovered Brother Charles Reckamp's toothy daylilies through that blog and ended up at the Klehm Song Sparrow Nursery website and even ordered a couple. And I believe TECHNY SPIDER received some award last year, too, if I remember correctly.

I think fringe will be important for the larger teeth or horns in the future and the south has fringe....BG
