I just noticed an animal has broken off the growing shoot of a newly planted Lilium lankongense. I have had this happen before to Orientals and they didn't survive it. Does anyone know how to baby it to produce a new shoot?

Lilies don't typically regrow another stem in the same season, once broken. It may weaken the bulb, but it very well may come back next year.

I agree I've had that happen here, too. I thought the plants had died, but they returned the following year.

Hi there Handed, another Australian! Welcome!

L. lankongense is a wanderer too, so you might see little leaves come up from bulblets on the stolon (underground stem). There won't be another main stem up top this year, but you can take super good care of those little guys and maybe have a clump of small stems next year.

Thanks, I like good news. My wildlife are so lovely I can't be mad with them. The kangaroos accidentally step on things sometimes.

Welcome Vanessa Welcome!

You've got kangaroos--we've got deer. Always something, yet in spite of all that, we still have plenty of lilies. I guess we've learned to live with it, one way or another.
