Here's Wild Horses, blazing away in my garden, prettiest bloom I've seen on the plant to date:

Angie, when I did my last major cutback, Wild Horses was one that was cut. I miss it. I am not a fan of eyes in general... but I've loved WH since I first saw it in John Rice's greenhouse the year it came out. It is one southern plant that did fantastic here. I have a friend who has some of it locally and I may ask for a piece of it to put in the perennial bed out front. Many of the plants that were put in there last spring didn't make it over winter, so there is some room. I want to pick some of my remaining seedlings to put in there first, then will see what space is left.

I can see WH planted near a dark Bee Balm such as Raspberry Wine. Or even near phlox or .... it would go well with just about anything. It's a mixed bed, so....

Juli: I'll let you know if my clump is large enough to divide and if you can't get a fan from your friend, I'll send you one. It's beautiful, but I don't remember what I have planted around it off the top of my head. My mind is not what it used to be Confused I do think this is the best bloom I've had from it since I planted it 4 years ago. Maybe Raspberry Candy would look good near it.

Your bloom is the correct color --- this one is not showing right... I had to lighten up the background so you could see some detail in the darkness. And, back when I had Wild Horses, digital cameras were not as good as they are now. If you click to enlarge this photo, you will see the plant I am talking about here. Wild Horses was at the back of 3 rows of daylilies, and behind that was a few perennials and some shrubs. Right behind it is a variegated hydrangea that I grow for the foliage. Then, behind that is a Japanese Ninebark 'Diablo'. Diablo got to big and I had it taken out two years ago. But the combination of Wild Horses with Diablo 10 feet behind was pretty nice!

Thanks for your offer... I am sure I can come up with WH up here. I gave it to several people who still have it. I'm trying to figure out what plants to bring back into the mixed perennial bed. I want it really thick with plants.

Oh, Juli, I do like the combo with Diablo. I've been eying ninebarks and just don't have a place for them yet. The dark background really makes WH pop, doesn't it? I really need to redo all my DLs and work on my color combos. Let me see if I can find a photo of Raspberry Candy. BRB.

Can't find one right now. I'll find one and post it for you.

Definitely don't like the IS. Have to review my photos from last year and see what I like with it. Maybe just a solid color, pale pink or lavender.

As far as daylilies, I used to have my sales beds by alphabet... And they looked pretty good! For me, the challenge is mixing them with other perennials. Since daylily reds are not red, purples are not purple, pinks are not pink, compared with the vivid "true" colors of other flowers.

Great suggestions, but I don't have Dark Star! Spiders and UFOs don't appeal to me that much, but that's a beautiful DL, Kim!
