Me too, and I agree the seedling has diamond dusting. It is easier to see in person, diamond dusting does not always show up in photos ~Jan

I just love the red, too! Red is probably my second least favorite daylily color, after yellow, but that one is stunning!!!

Vanessa, Frillylily, and Sandy - Thanks for the explanation about diamond dusting! Sandy, yours are heart-stoppers! WOW! I see what you are trying to show me in those bloom photos! That's really neat and very beautiful! Thanks for the terrific explanations!

I looked and looked for a picture of mine that might show the diamond dusting and couldn't find one.

Sandy, those are some excellent pictures. The diamond dusting shows very well and that gold dust is awesome Smiling

Thanks everyone! The seedling with the diamond dusting is one of my favorite seedlings although it is actually more on the pink side. I caught it on a day when it was a deeper color and the lighting was just right to capture the dusting!

Just lovely, all of them!

Frillylily, is 'Speechless' one that would be known as having "chicken fat"? I have heard that term before, but wasn't sure if it is actually called out in the description in AHS.

yes I would describe it that way. It did okay for me, but I am not a fan of the chicken fat edges and on cool mornings they take a long time to open. It is one I gave away when I moved.

I'm not a big fan of the ones that have a lot of 'chicken fat' either. Although, I haven't seen too many, so really don't have a lot to go on.

I like chicken fat! It's funny how so many of us love the same things, and dislike others! There really is something for everyone, which is why I really love daylilies!

I like the chicken fat, too. But I know what some of you mean when you say daylilies have trouble opening on a hot day when they have the chicken fat trait. Mine tend to stick together and only partially open by the end of the bloom season because the temps have climbed here in my zone. But I do like that trait regardless ....

I only have a couple that have chicken fat, and they never got hung up. But, I was in zone 5a, so maybe that was why. Even in my new zone, the morning are rather cool, so I don't expect to have any problems.

I think my memories of gutting chickens as a kid has my thinking on chicken fat clouded. When I see the chicken fat on the daylilies, it reminds me of the chicken fat around the gizzard of the chicken. Sometimes it would be a lot, but we had to try to clean as much off as possible. But the image is still not very appealing to me.

Maybe if I had a few daylilies with chicken fat, I would see things in a different way Shrug! Smiling

Vickie, I understand that too. When a small child we had chickens too. To me it is a disgusting term for a lovely edge.

There is a characteristic that is much like diamond dusting that I call a "metallic" edge. When it is seen it is typically on gold or silver edges, not ones that are just white or yellow. If any of you are familiar with automotive paint, the effect of the metallic edge is much like what was once referred to as a "metal-flake" paint job. The painting process used a layer of silver or gold paint that included tiny flakes of aluminum and then a top layer of paint that was clear with only a color in it. This resulted in seeing the color of the top coating, but seeing the sparkling of the aluminum flakes through the color, and as the light hit the paint job from different angles, the flakes sparkled.
I have asked a few people if they could explain what the flakes in the daylily edging consist of, but I have not gotten an answer yet. Here is a close up picture of a toothy seedling I have grown for a couple of years with the metallic appearance. You can see something in the gold edging, but I cannot get enough resolution from the picture for you to see the metallic-looking flakes clearly.

Welcome! to All Things Plants Larry!!

Very cool picture, and I love your description of it being like metal-flake paint. That makes sense to me! I never could figure out what a metallic edge was before, but now I get it! I sure would like to see a picture of the entire bloom! From what I see, I bet it's stunning!
