This may be totally off the wall but what about a "soils" week: clay, sandy, alkaline, acidic, water-logged, etc. Perhaps there could be info on correcting the imbalances that many of us face as well as suggested plants that thrive in these environments.?

Oh hosta, yes hostas are very popular but could go with a Shade Gardening Week.

How about Cottage Gardening Week?

Newyorkrita said:With medicinal herbs, so many people take prescription medications and I know there are medicinal herbs that should not be used in conjunctions with certain medications. Can't think of an example right now but there are plenty out there.

The one that comes to mind immediately is plain old grapefruit juice. It does not agree with many of the commonly taken medications.

Medicinal plants were just a thought. I know many people who, as we are all getting older, are looking for more natural methods to ease the symptoms of aging. I also understand that it is a more controversial topic.

Medicinal herbs are good. Just want everyone to be careful and know everything is not for everyone under all circumstances.

Yes, hibiscus would be a great week! Shrubs, Japanese Maples, groundcovers, succulents, fragrant plants week, iris in all forms, annual veggies and perennial veggies and even a composting week. How about a preserving the harvest week? Whistling

Perhaps in 2015 we'll choose to branch out again, but for 2014 we will stick with only plants as official Week topics. As always, we're happy to publish articles and tips relating to every aspect of gardening, though Thumbs up

I would like to see veggies split from Annuals. Have a separate veggie week and a separate annual week. Maybe it is just me but veggies and annuals are so different from each other, although most veggies are grown as annuals. But I think of annuals as flowers that provide lots of color in the garden all summer.

I had the same observation about Tropicals and Houseplants.... they each deserve their own week I think, as do annuals and vegetables.

I agree with Rita. Annual flowers deserve a week of their own.

Edited to say I also agree with Hetty.

Thanks for the list Trish. With all the great suggestions (and still coming) I would encourage not repeating weeks already covered. All good topics with a lot to offer.

Second on shrubs, J. maples, and fragrant flowers. Grasses?

Out to work in the yard, but looking forward to more suggestions.

See now, I am of the opposite thinking. I think Daylilies week, Bulbs Week, Wildflowers week, Veggie week, Roses week, Vines and climbers week all need to become annual events. You have to think of it as what has a lot of appeal. I think those categories all have a lot of interest. Daylilies and roses certainly are very popular flowers.

Yes, we have to assign prominence to topics that will attract a lot of traffic to the site. Daylilies, roses, vegetables, and several other topics from this year will do that again next year. Dave can look up the numbers and see which topics work best in that regard.

How about Native Plants by State week? that should be very interesting. We could choose a different state for each week of the designated month and in 12 years we could cover them all. Smiling

I agree I agree with Zuzu.

I was thinking for instance. I have no interest in Houseplants but I know Houseplants are very popular. But if I did grow houseplants I would grow African Violets. In fact I once did many years ago. But don't think an African Violets week would be overly popular so just include it in an article during Houseplant week. That would be if there is a Houseplant week.

That is why I like the Daisey's week idea. Can include coneflowers and all sorts of daisy type flowers.

And shade garden week can include all sorts of plants that thrive in the shade, not limited to one plant like Hosta week might be. But then Hostas are very popular.

I don't think I have enough patience for a 12 year plan! Rolling on the floor laughing

I still like Wildflowers week much better than native plants week. You guys all did a fantastic job on Wildflowers week this year.

I'm crazy about ornamental and garden grasses.
Also would there be a category for plume, spike, feathery type flowers? A category broader than Celosia but that sort of look.
