The botanists have been busy, so I've added about 200 new species and subspecies to the Sedums Database. Meanwhile, some of the most familiar Sedum species have been moved to the Hylotelephium, Petrosedum, and Phedimus genera, among others.

This has had a drastic effect on the cultivars once known as sedums, and most of them are no longer in the Sedums Database. Such well-known "sedums" as Autumn Joy, Matrona, and Vera Jameson, for example, aren't sedums anymore.

The Sedum species are still listed as synonyms or as "also-sold-as" names in these entries, so you shouldn't have any trouble finding them if you use the main database search engine or if you first search for "sedum" and then click on "Click here to view all plants in the genus: sedum" (769 plants). You won't find them if you search only in the special Sedums Database, however (600 plants).

I have found that when searching for a specie within sedum that I do have to use the Plant Database instead of the specialized Sedum search.
I can still use the Sedum search when looking for cultivars.
Great job Zuzu. That was a huge project. Thank you so much for doing it. Group hug

Oh wow! Zuzu do you have any articles about why the change? I will also do a search. That was a big job to sort out that mess.

I agree Huge.
But our ATP database is so search friendly, we shouldn't have any trouble finding them under the new names. Thumbs up

It's true that you won't have any trouble finding them if you use general search capabilities, but I wanted to warn you that many are no longer located in the Sedums Database. Here's the "M" page if you search by genus, for instance:

http://garden.org/plants/brows...

Here's the "M" page if you search by parent plant:

http://garden.org/plants/brows...

Only 3 of the 14 cultivars currently discovered in a general search are still in the Sedums Database.

Julia, I haven't run into any articles dealing specifically with Sedum. This is just a matter of scientific progress. DNA testing is now available to botanists, and as they test various plants, they find similarities or differences that can assign them to different species and even to different genera.

Some genera have disappeared completely. We once bought plants of the Lychnis genus and plants of the Silene genus, but botanists have discovered that all of the Lychnises actually are Silenes, so Lychnis no longer exists as a genus.

A change that might be more pertinent to people in this forum is the disappearance of the Jovibarba genus. All of the Jovibarba species have been reclassified as synonyms for Sempervivum species, so that's another big job that has to be done.

Good to know. I was just going to label all my Jovibarba. Lynn, how are you going to label your plants in this group in your gardens?

Thanks, Greg. I'm very excited about the daylilies.

Julia, the Jovibarba move is going to take some time, so don't worry about how you're going to label anything yet. Just use the familiar Jovibarba names for now. At some point, they probably will be moved to the Sempervivum Database, but you can still call them Jovibarba unless you're building a taxonomic database. Smiling
