Natalie, gotta add my two cents worth of Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing !! Maybe if a daylily is named after him, it can have the word 'hybernizer' in it. That is soooo funny!

I was kind of like your Dad about 15 years ago, Natailie. I didn't like flowers and didn't want to weed or get my hands dirty. I can't imagine life without them now, but I haven't gone wild with seeds like your Dad. More power to him!! I tip my hat to you.

Thanks for the great laugh after a full workday!

Good idea on naming a daylily after him with hybernizer in the name! I need to make an ugly one just for him! We had this contest every year when I was a kid, to see who could create the ugliest dyed Easter egg! Dad and I would spend hours at it, dipping and redipping the eggs, until they were disgusting. Rolling on the floor laughing Hilarious! My Mom and sister were busy making these gorgeous eggs, with pretty flowers on them, and Dad and I weren't happy until we created something truly ugly! Of course, it was always a tie!

Dad just called me a minute ago to see if I knew where to find the seeds on a plant that he couldn't remember the name of! It was that pink one. You know. The pink one?

Vickie - BRILLIANT IDEA! I love naming a hybrid daylily using "hybernizer" in the name!

Natalie - What is your dad's first name?

You KNOW you GOT TO DO IT!!!! That would be a hoot!!!! Rolling on the floor laughing Hilarious! Rolling on the floor laughing Hilarious! Rolling on the floor laughing Hilarious! Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing

Maybe you need to run a contest here on this forum for the "ugliest" daylily blooming plant ever! Maybe do a trade with whoever has it (for some fans). Maybe you could offer a small double fan of your favorite daylily or let the person pick from what you have (that can be divided)!

Yes, I have to do it!! I'm thinking more brown with ugly spots though! Something REALLY ugly! I've had some ugly blooms in my day, but never really that ugly! This is going to be impossible! I don't think I have anything that would make brown seedlings!

We usually have a "bad hair day" thread here for ugly blooms, but nothing on there has ever been what I'd call ugly. They are always hilarious! Rolling on the floor laughing Hmmm. I need to look into some that are registered that I think are ugly (yes, there are a few!), and see what I can come up with! This should be fun!

I think after I give it to my Dad, I'll tell him to "hybernize" it, and see if he can come up with something worse! Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing

Hilarious! Hilarious! Hilarious! Jan, I was thinking the chocolate ones would be a good place to start! I'll see if I can find some plants at a good price first. I really don't like the chocolate colored ones, but didn't want to actually say that! However, I've never seen one in person, and they are probably much prettier in person. If I could figure out how to put something on it that looks like a really bad rash, I'd have a winner!

Natalie, try a stippled, I think that's what they call them, I do not like them, to me they are just blotchy, just my opinion of course, I'm sure there are those that love them. Hilarious!

Okay now, Natalie...
You don't like the yellows or oranges. You don't like the reds. You don't like chocolates.
You love whites and pinks.

I'm seeing a color wheel thing going on here Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing

I'm wondering if you shouldn't go a little the opposite of the grease monkey dark color just for the contradiction of it all. I think it would be cool to try for a white daylily with a chocolate edge to name after your dad. Greasy black on the outside, but pure and clean on the inside. Smiling

The chocolates are actually prettier in person. I know this first one is a dip, I am pretty sure the rest are tets (although I haven't verified)

Milk Chocolate
Thumb of 2013-10-23/philljm/6a445b

Coffeehouse - almost lost this one due to rot, didn't even expect to see a bloom this year and it surprised me. It's actually more chocolatey than this photo depicts, the sunlight is diluting the color. Gift plant
Thumb of 2013-10-23/philljm/2860d3

Old Termite - another gift plant, it bloomed for well over a month. It truly was a blooming fool.
Thumb of 2013-10-23/philljm/699cc1

Prototype - Not classified as a "brown", it's sort of an orangeish brown in my garden. The photo doesn't do it justice.
Thumb of 2013-10-23/philljm/8047c8

Remind me next summer, and let me know what color crosses you want - and I will see what I can do. I did not set out to have this many browns - I got Milk Chocolate because it's an older daylily and was unique to me at the time. As mentioned, two were gift plants. I really fell in love with Old Termite this summer, it was amazing, even during the summer drought we had. ~Jan

Cindy, it has taken a few years to clump up, but I really enjoy it. Still not a big enough clump to divide, but it is a fun one, in my front garden - I get a lot of compliments on it, sitting right next to the driveway like that. The others are in a back garden and aren't seen by others as much. Really, how many chocolate colored flowers does anyone see? ~Jan

Maybe if I was a miracle worker, I could do that! I'm sure there have been a ton of people trying for that combo, so it must not be possible to create! I sure would love it though! I don't think I've ever seen a black edge on a daylily, and I know I've never seen a pure and clean white, either. Those things are still off in the future. Pure and clean isn't my Dad though! Jan, that is so sweet of you to offer to make some crosses for me, but I want to see if I can come up with something first. If I fail, I'll ask for your help! Thumbs up I really doubt that I'll have success making something truly ugly, since it's probably not possible, but I'd love to try! I'm thinking the name should be Hybernized Easter Egg. Hilarious!

My coworker tried to snarf that one from me right away when she heard I got it as a bonus. I told her she had to wait a few years, and I will give her some.

Natalie - just let me know, I bet "I" can come up with some Ugs! And I love the name! ~Jan

In regards to growing the un-named daylilies - there are MANY. How many of you have had club plant sales and the person is not looking at the name, just the picture of the flower. They don't give a hoot what its name is. They just need a beautiful garden flower for their yard. When I first got into daylilies, I bought some seedlings from a lady not too far from Waller. She had names on all of her flowers, so I just put names on the seedlings that I bought from her. Sounded good to me.
