Can you still divide daylilies this time of year if transplanting them into the ground as well as 3 gallon pots? Thanks!

In your zone I would think there would be no problem. Maybe someone in your zone will chime in.

They should be fine to transplant now. I will be dividing a couple today. I use pine straw to protect the roots. It also breaks down in about a year. It is great to enrich your soil.

They should be fine, I'm in your zone. Just mulch them with something.

Yup, 9b here, still dividing, planting and/or potting up with good health rebound. I plan to stop after the end of next week when overnight temps will go below 50 degrees for the first time (I don't mulch). Have fun! And, Welcome to ATP!!

This is the perfect time to divide daylilies in our zone. I live just 40 miles west of Houston and we always wait until the hot days and cool nights have passed. Now that the temps are in the range from 75-85 this means the weather is perfect. You can also pot up daylilies that you have divided. I use 3-gallon pots for either new purchases or one that I want to keep for the Spring sales. You can divide daylilies up until December in our lower part of the state. I am 8B. Right now am waiting for my broken arm to heal completely so that I can get out and put out my 50 pots that I have collected from May until now. Happy gardening.

Eddie - So sorry to hear about your broken arm. I broke my arm the end of August and it is just about healed. It drove me nuts not to be able to get out and dig in the dirt for the first few weeks after I fractured it.

Michele - I am in Florida, too. Zone 9b. When is the latest I can plant them? I have about 60 new seedlings that I've had in long containers growing over the summer. I was thinking I'd get them all into the ground this week, but it may take me longer than a week. I was also thinking of waiting until after Halloween so they don't get trampled by trick or treaters.

I'm in 9a/b here on the beach in the Daytona area. I wait also for the cooler days to start (they started 2 days ago), then I go out to dig/divide/improve soil. I've done it through January, but it gets too cold then, so now I try to get it done before Christmas. That usually isn't a challenge. Small yard.

I see Arlene answered first, but I usually plant here up until December also. We may get a few freezes (usually in Dec) but I just cover the plants with black nursery pots if it is going to freeze close to when I plant. I still have another 2 weeks to go on getting all my dividing done and I will have at least one more order coming this fall from Petit probably in November to plant plus I will have to replant the ones I'm keeping for hybridizing after everything is divided and all the beds are empty. I hope to be DONE by the end of November this year, but we shall see.

I'm amending with cow, Plant-tone, perlite, pine fines and palm fertilizer. Just finished my "premier" box with all the items mentioned. It was in bad shape because it hadn't been amended for 3 years or so. It looked like a peat brick. None of the other boxes are as bad, so I'll add stuff to them to refill them. If much is added, existing daylilies will have to be raised up a bit too since they tend to pull themselves down into the soil. Just things that need to be done during this lovely time of year.

Don't over-do it, Michelle! Being finished by the end of Nov. is really good timing--I think I'll get it all done by Thanksgiving.

Since I re-do most of the beds each fall due to dividing each fall I can add everything in the beds and till it all in. I usually add pine bark (the dime size pieces), maybe some sand if any needs to be added, chicken litter, alfalfa pellets, and Milorganite; if the ph is on the high side I will add lime to lower it.

Michele - Thank you! I bet in a few years, the soil in your raised daylily beds will be like gardener's gold, since you are amending it every year!

I used the following for my new winding border bed today: Pine fines, sand, cow manure compost, bagged soil, and 6-6-6 fertilizer. I added almost 50 young plants (all grown from seeds) in that border. They are all crosses I did last year and have been growing in a couple of containers to get them started growing this year. The hardest part is separating them all out of the long rectangular containers. Roots galore! I am always amazed at how healthy they look underground with their nice root systems. But a pain to separate. If I had the room, I'd grow them all in a baby wading pool in their own pots and just water them by adding water to the pool. I know someone that does that and it works great for her. My current method of growing the seedlings the first year makes the daylilies REALLY appreciate the stretching room when I put them in the ground. LOL! Sorta like my cooking tastes better when I make my family wait, longer than they expected, to eat.

Thanks to everyone for replying! I was bit by the daylily bug two years ago and needed to do some dividing this fall.

This is my first year dividing some and potting them for future sale.
