Does anyone recognize this one? Alocasia or Colocasia? It's one of those Exotic Angel plants with a tag that reads Alocasia infernalis 'Black Magic' but I thought 'Black Magic' was the Colocasia that gets to be about 6' tall? Many times the EA plants are mislabeled and I'm hoping this is one that will stay small.

Jewel Alocasia (Alocasia infernalis) is the correct name Lin. Black Magic is a common name not a cv. name. Keep it warm and on the dry side like the other jewels. Yours is very nice, how many are in the pot?

Evan: Thanks so much for the correct name/ID. I really liked the looks of those dark leaves when I spotted it at Lowes last week and since it was only $4.98 I took a chance in hoping it wasn't going to grow large like the Colocasia. There are 2 little plants in that pot.

Thanks again for the help and especially for the info about keeping it on the dry side!

Your welcome. After killing mine with too much love (water), I decided some homework was in order. I agree Those deep glossy leaves are fantastic. Is it a sign of some condition when you get lost in a leaf?

I have a little Jewel as well, although the leaves on mine aren't as black as yours, Lin. I don't know what variety this one is, as it was a bonus I got with a trade about a year ago. My friend just labeled it "Dwarf Jewel Alo". The biggest leaf is about 7in long.

Wow, that's gorgeous Elaine. Maybe a hybrid with some A. cuprea in it?

Good luck with the infernalis!
You may need it!
Tricky little boogers!

Mine still not dead but that's about it, if it makes it to next may it might have a chance...that is what last October when I got it

@dyzzypyxxy

Didn't you show a pic of that plant before? popping out of the side of a container...
Someone did! Maybe it was one you shared? I dunno...
It's alocasia cuprea, Dewey's reversa.
The name refers to the lighter portions of the leaves being around the veins and the darker in the vein margins, there's not a Dewey's normal or non reversa...

I been wanting to give one a shot but they are notoriously easily to kill/ hard to grow, so I haven't tryied, yours looks great!

There's a red cuprea as well, it's stunning, and other more normal colored ones...
Please tree mail me for trades, I'm ALWAYS actively looking for more new plants, and love to trade!

Sway, where can we see a good pic of Dewey's Reversa? Is it a hybrid? A. cuprea has peltate leaves doesn't it?

When you get a chance a good link to Dewey's would be nice. I don't know it and it sounds kind of rare and nice. All we have is a blank entry in the DB.

And here I thought it was putting on those 'reversa' leaves because I wasn't feeding it enough! Hilarious!

I think mine looks like across between your cuprea picture above, Evan, and the picture on LariAnn's site. Non-peltate leaves (had to go look that up, Evan Big Grin ) but a bit more round than those in the link at Aroidia.

Thanks for that link Lin! LariAnn's site, one stop shopping for Alocasia info. Is that a bloom tucked in there Elaine (bright green) or a leaf from a pup? That plant looks happy, what are your temps like? I need to try some more of these. I've had two both deceased.

Had to run out and check with a flashlight, Evan! I miss Daylight Savings already.

That is a new leaf, not a bloom. Our temps have been in the high 70's to low 80's with lows mostly in the 60's. Saturday night was really chilly, 57deg. Big Grin November is one of the best months of the year for weather, with very little rain and perfect temperatures.

Let us know how it holds up to the chilly temps. Brrrr. Green Grin! I was noticing my tropical hibiscus hasn't dropped it's leaves yet and we've had lots of mornings with frost. Last night was down to the mid-low 20's and it's 27 right now.

I'm glad that you asked about that plant Lin. I have one faultering in a pot with some colocasia somewhere that I need to locate and bring it and keep drier as suggested. I thought it was the tall colocasia. I'm new to growing aroids and have so much to learn. I have just one question. It's about Hi Lo Beauty. It is an alocacia or colocasia and can it be allowed to go dormant for the winter or do I need to keep it growing?
