Natalie is correct, that is why the database is so important. I too have learned a lot by checking out the bloom photos and comments in the database here at ATP. But I am sure that no matter how much research I do, that some will disappoint me, and some will go beyond my expectations. But at least by checking out the database, I can see what flowers look like in other gardens across many environments. There s much that affects a plant, besides just its genetics.

As for our genetics, that is why it is so nice that you can get seeds shipped there. I am sure it is more difficult & costly to get the actual US plants, but seeds can help one get a jump on the more recent hybrids at a cheaper price. ~Jan

How does buying seeds work? I have never done it. I was all eyes on the other thread. Do you know the parents? I assume none of them would be registered varieties even if they they looked like them after growing and flowering? They would actually be seedling numbers? Do you wait for the flower wondering what magnificence is going to bloom. And sometimes it does? Then do you cull? If you do, how do you learn to be tough?

I do hybridise. I have been concentrating on flower form in yellows. My philosophy has been one of deconstruction. So far my results suggest that either I or my seedlings should be shot.

Earl Barfield flowered double today - at last. I am not sure I like it. Looks like a vegetable casserole I make. Am I unfair? Last year I remember some of the blooms were quite lovely. Some daylily plants are temperamental. One has to follow them all through all their flowering to see them at their best.....

Sorry Glen. But I just had to laugh. As much as I love daylilies, some doubles just don't appeal to me and I have to agree with you here. Maybe it's the combination of the color and form. But at any rate, I can guarantee you there are other dl lovers who would snap this up in an instant!

Just took a look at the list of my daylilies and I have 15 doubles myself, about half of which I really don't care for. I may have to do something about that since I really have no room for more and if these go, then I will. I've never gotten rid of a daylily before, so that will be hard to do. hmmmmm....

I love that double of yours! I'm a huge fan of doubles though, and haven't really seen one that I don't like.

Buying seed is something that I've never done, since I prefer to make my own at this point, but a lot of people buy seed. It is a great way to get genetics from plants you love but are too expensive. I'm not positive about this, but normally, you can register the resulting daylily yourself. It seems like there is a rule that the person's garden where the plant blooms for the first time is the one that has the right to register is. Something like that anyway. Hopefully someone with some brains will come along and explain that a little better!

I don't think you have to me an AHS member to register a daylily; I have read the rules and I don't remember seeing that anywhere. There was a long discussion somewhere about the fees and such and it was brought up that a lot of hybridizers are NOT AHS members. I could be wrong Shrug!

I'm no expert but yes that is correct. The person who owns the plant when it first blooms is considered the originator even if that person did not actually hybridize the plant. Also, if a person sells/gives you ALL of a seedling and says it is yours and you can do whatever you want with it then they are giving you permission to do exactly that; you can register it in your name and not have to put the other persons name on the form or get their permission. Now some will want you to get their permission and they will sign the registration form and then when it is registered it would have 2 names such as Smith-Harry P.

Thanks so much for the information. Seeds do sound a good way to go for me!

Today is 'Just Celebrate' - an oldie. This is the first time it has flowered for me. Mostly it has been having terrible hair days. So far: 1. sepals and petals have not unfolded properly or are missing and 2. when they do open it has a tendency to be tongue poker. Amazingly it has lots of pups already on the scapes. I hope it settles down for me to want to plant them.

Thanks for the confirmation Michele. I wasn't positive about that, so it's good to know. I bought a seedling a couple of years ago that hasn't been registered, but it did not bloom in my garden first. That is why I was thinking that you need to have it bloom in your own garden first, in order to register it. It didn't seem ethical for me to register it anyway, no matter what the rules state. I'd love to get it registered though, and have planned on asking the hybridizer to do that, and I'll pay the cost for it. It's totally worthy, but it's not my decision to make. I just keep forgetting to ask the hybridizer if they would be willing to do it.

As for joining the AHS, Glen lives in Australia, where they have their own AHS, so the rules may be different there. Not sure what the rules are for someone registering a daylily with the US AHS that is from another country. This is all so interesting, and I'm learning a lot!

Natalie. I think the AHS runs the registration on behalf of the world. Its authority for deciding nomenclature will come from the consensus of sister organisations and, ultimately, one of the big international biological scientific societies like International Union of Biological Sciences and its regulations. e.g. The International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants. I deal a lot with The International Code for Zoological Nomenclature. When it comes to naming, there is always a water tight legality to it that people are rarely aware off. It is these codes that drive consistency and stability of names and protect the names and their authors.
The problem is that when you are young your life it is ruined by your parents. When you are older it is ruined by your children.

This is one of my seedlings (GI 12 114). Milanese Mango self cross. It is a cute, sort of reverse bitone but similar to its parent. I had been sweeting on this bloom and something, which will remain anonymous, managed to get specks of kitty-litter on it, which is strongly hydrophilic.

Glen, that one just GLOWS. Love it. I myself am, not into pastels, but yellows and corals that glow, now that is a different story.

As for seeds - if you purchase seeds, you get to register any that seem worthwhile. Doesn't matter who hybridized the seeds.

If you are looking to add some genetics not found over there across this big pond, then yes, pick up some seeds - have you checked out the LA - the daylily auction? Some sellers only sell seeds within the US, but others will make the effort to ship overseas.

www.daylily.com

As for the genetics/ parents of that seed - if it is unknown, that is how the plant is registered. I have older daylilies - that 5 decades ago were registered, but I have no clue the names of them - any seedlings I get from them would be registered as unknown. I also have bee pods - that I know the pod parent, but have no clue of the pollen parent - so 1 would be identified, the other parent would not be.

I know that in the US, it is relatively inexpensive to register a daylily ~Jan

Love your seedling Glen! Even though orange is my least favorite color, I'm learning to love orange daylilies. That one looks fantastic!

I was going to mention the lily auction, but decided against it. I am NOT going to tell someone about a site that I refuse to look at!
