I am considering purchasing a bareroot Itoh Peony (Bartzella). When is it considered too late to plant? We are supposed to get some very cold weather (mid teens at night) heading our way next week and I don't know if it's too late to plant the bareroot. Would it be better to plant in a pot and keep in the garage until spring?

I would plant it right away in the ground and mulch it a bit so it takes root.
Peonies like the cold. I have peonies to dig in yet here.

Thanks for the fast response, Caroline. I will buy it now and immediate plant it as soon as I receive it. This is a surprise Christmas present for my son. Thanks again!

Caroline, do you grow tree peonies or the Itoh hybrids way up there?

Other people here do grow Itohs and tree peonies.
I grow mainly Lactifloras, and what ever NOIDS that I can find cheap late in the season.
I missed the sales of Itohs this year.
I think one needs to watch for the more hardy cultivars of both Itohs and Tree peonies.

I am pleasantly surprised, Caroline.

You gardeners up there seem to get away with a lot of things!
