I made another small enhancement to the plant database homepage, specifically to the area that shows the newest images.

Starting now, it actually shows you the most thumbed images from among the most recently uploaded photos. The list should change frequently as thumbs as given.

This way, when a visitor hits the front page, they will see the more interesting photos, rather than just the new ones.

As before, if you want to see photos as they come in, then you can do that on the ATP homepage, as well as the very nice webapp called "Plant Photos View". In fact, if you haven't seen that webapp yet, go to the Webapps section (linked from the left navbar) and check it out.

Dave, I currently have my preferences set to 400. While on the home page, when I select See more new plant database photos the Browsing Our Plant Photos page that opens only shows 20 photos. Time: Today; Sort by: New.

Actually the Time: setting doesn't seem to work. The same photos are displayed regardless of what you select.

If you select "Today" it will only show you today's pictures. If you select "Last Week" it will show you all photos from the past week, including today. That's why it appears to not work. It's just a longer list.

Choose to sort by popular or buzzing and the timeframe will be more useful. Then you can see what's most popular in the last day, week, or month.

I wonder if Dave fixed it after you posted?

Ahh, gotcha. Thanks for that, Evan.

That page does not obey your preferences and it wasn't designed to. I don't want to send hundreds of images at once if I can help it.

The page shows 20 at a time but there was a bug in the chunking. I fixed that and it should work for you properly now.

It's amazing how many photos get uploaded to the database. Our members love sharing their photos! In the last 24 hours, 170 photos were added to the database by 20 different people.

This new system may be open to a positive feedback loop type of problem, though, Dave? In other words, once an image gets a few thumbs up it stays on the front page longer than it otherwise would have, allowing it to be seen by more people and garner more thumbs, thus staying on the front page longer....... and around the cycle goes. Meanwhile, other images are never displayed on the front page and don't get seen unless members specifically look for them or see them next to the forum home pages (if the plant is popular enough to have its own forum).

This seems to be what has happened so far. A couple hundred images have been added to the database over the past day or so, but I believe the front page has pretty much displayed the same handful of sempervivum and daylily images the whole time, which is fine. But, it seems likely there will be a real bias in favor of the plants with the most fans here, sempervivums, daylilies, irises, roses, and probably just a few others?

I think it makes it where we could miss some very special plants. I always check the new images on my home page to see what is new. I have found some special plants that I had never heard of. I love that.
