Maybe this would be a better place to pose this query…I posted originally in ID…on second thought, I think it should have been here… The thread "Need your opinion here" in Plant ID forum

Thanks

Tara: It does look like the cultivar shown in the database Wheatstraw Celosia (Celosia spicata 'Flamingo Feather')

When I posted on the Plant ID thread I didn't mean to sound like I was saying it was incorrect. I woke up a bit foggy with a little head cold this morning and I meant to say that I thought "Flamingo Feather" was a common name for Celosia and didn't realize there was a cultivar by that name. Your beautiful plant looks like the one at the above database link.

I'm always a bit confused about this plant, too, so I'm no help.

Thanks Lin, and I wasn't meaning to ignore your response, *Blush* I just thought better of where I had placed the question to begin with. *Blush* I too was thinking that it looked like the cultivar, but the difference in the leaves was making me think otherwise. I wasn't sure, and I didn't want to put it in the wrong place, in the DB, without a more knowledgable confirmation.
I'm with you…I always thought that all Celosia's were commonly called Flamingo Flowers, along with other common names. Didn't know, until I went to the DB that there was a separate cultivar.

I hope you can shake that head cold before it really grabs you! Horrible time of year for it. I swear by 'Airborne' effervescent's when I feel a cold coming on. They've kicked 'em out of me more than once! Feel better!!! Lovey dubby

Thanks ladies; hope to feel better soon cause Friday morning we are traveling to Georgia for the weekend and it's going to be cold there! :)

I found the photo below in the files on my laptop. It's a plant grown from seed that I rec'd in trade a few years back. The seed pack was labeled C. argentea var. spicata 'Flamingo Flower'. If I remember correctly it reached a height of @ 5' but it was grown in a container. It doesn't look like the one pictured in the database. Maybe we need to request a DB parent plant entry for Celosia.

I'm not sure if it's warranted or not but I put in a request for a database "Parent Plant" entry for Celosia.

Ah, but this does in fact look like the cutting that I had received. The reddish leaves took on a much brighter purple when I put it in the ground.

The leaves on mine got real reddish and purple when I moved it to more sun. I wish I had seeds cause it sure was a pretty plant even when not in bloom. I may have to get some celosia seeds to plant in the garden next spring. Green Grin!

I found another picture of the Celosia that I grew from seed, this is the same plant:

Very pretty! Definitely not the same one I have. Love it with the Caladium!

I'm wondering if Celosia argentea var. spicata is even a legitimate name. I've not been able to find publication details of this name on IPNI or ePIC.

The COL, GRIN, The Plant List and Tropicos don't mention this variety. TPL does mention C. spicata which is under review by Kew.
MOBOT notes "...Celosia argentea var. cristata is currently divided into four different groups: (1) Plumosa Group, (2) Cristata Group, (3) Childsii Group and (4) Spicata Group"
The RHS DB notes the same, however I do the search.

I wonder if this may be an instance where common, incorrect, usage among plant sellers gets propagated around.

Thanks Evan…I've added mine to the DB under 'Parent' plant Celosia. Maybe once it's fully recognized, assuming that it will be, then I guess it could be moved?

Thanks again, everyone, for your answers. Thumbs up

@terrafirma, we'd find it very helpful if you could add a caption noting Celosia argentea var. spicata 'Flamingo Feather'. If the names get changed or entries are merged or split, we can then have an idea of what goes where.
