From my earliest gardening days I've noticed how one plant can make a neighboring plant look better just by color repetition. It seems to lead the eye to notice how the color is repeated and makes for a more pleasing look. I'll add a few examples.

The yellow lilies in the background seem to show up the center yellowish stripe of Firestar.

The echinacea, Bravado, repeats the same color as the nameless hydrangeas behind it.

Here the haze of light blue seems to infiltrate into the echinacea.

The blue/purple of salvia Caradonna is the same as the outline of the eyelash on this pseudata, Shiryukyo, and the coreopsis Zagreb, in the background, plays up the yellow in the pseudata iris.

In 1994 Pamela Harper's book Color Echoes: Harmonizing Color in the Garden, was released and it promotes the idea of repetition of color. I had done it with daylilies many times prior without realizing exactly what it was that made certain plants look even better due to having the same color or tint in a nearby plant. It works equally well with foliage as with flowers. http://www.amazon.com/Color-Echoes-Harmonizing-Garden/dp/002...

One of my favorites, Japanese iris Amethyst and friends.

I love Color Echoes. This is going to be so much fun! My favorite so far is the Caradonna/Shiryukyo/Zagreb combination.

Thanks, Zuzu. I like that one as well and it was totally unplanned when I planted the pseudata irises.

Japanese irises seem well suited to the subject since they all go together so well and never seem to clash. It's just like a big mist of lavender/blue and purple.

Love it pirl, my very favorite was the pseudata iris. I have not had much experience with color echoes because I did not understand it completely but I am starting to get it and I had a few echoes mainly by accident and the fact that I love pink flowers.

I see the echoes in yours, Susan. The light pink of the foxglove is echoed in the lighter shade of pink on the echinacea. Nice foliage mixture!

Great, Susan. Now you certainly have it!

Lilies Tango has the same dark spots as Dimension's color. I always look back and wish I had taken more photos of the same scene!

Here is an echo gone wrong. I tried to echo the yellow in this hosta with a yellow heuchera. The hosta got too big! In the second pic the heuchera is actually under the hosta. LOL.

Still an ideal match, Susan, and the hosta also matches the smaller hosta at the rear in the first photo.

Lovely, Anne! It makes a person stare to see the magic at work.

I hope everything works out for Lisa. This is a very stunning lily. I was unable to find it in the database. I wanted to put it on my wish list in case I get a chance to buy one. Can you check the spelling for me or do you have a link?

Thanks!!
