That's good. Though it would have been interesting to see if someone bit. There is some very interesting research into how people perceive value and quality when items are priced differently.

Am I the only one going on strike from sellers who offer single fans? Im so used to bidding on a double fan that very often turns into 3 or 4 by the time I get it. I know some people dont mind, but I just feel like its "cheap" to offer only a single fan. I bought several last winter and none of them bloomed this year. That being said, I finally got River City Gold, which Ive been coveting for a couple of years. Cant wait to get it this spring.

I will buy SF if that's the only way I can get them and of course when I buy the "new" intros a lot of them are SF. I would rather have DFs but I won't NOT buy from a seller just because they are SFs. Some of the sellers sell SFs because they don't have a lot of increase and may not have many to sell plus it gives the buyers who may be on a tight budget access to more daylilies if they sell as SFs and are more in their price range.

The "newer" ones are almost always sold as SFs with the exception of a few that sell them as DFs but usually the end selling price is way up their on most and a lot of people just can't afford them.

I agree

I have also found that often those listing single fans are doing so because they were lined out that way. You may get more than a single fan but if they are slow to increase, or the weather does not cooperate, you may not. I have only purchased from one seller who listed a single fan and every one was exactly that. They were large and healthy and exactly what I purchased so I was not upset.

@ocalagal Welcome! Welcome!

Good to have you here, we love honest opinions! No need to go on strike, just buy what you like! I only buy single fans from people I know and trust. The ones I got last year were huge! I am getting some newer ones this year and most are singles but I am just thrilled to be getting these cultivars and they do fine for me, I figure even if I do have to wait a year to see blooms, it is worth it because at least I got what I wanted at an affordable price.

I dislike receiving single fans. For some reason it takes me ages to get increase. It's maybe the cats' faults. The ones I just received are all 2-4 - just love it.

Ive found that its much easier to lose a single fan to withering away, rather than a double fan, even if the fans are small. I guess if you could actually see a picture of the fan you are getting, it would be easier to buy. I know some single fans can be huge. One I got was a single, but you could see how it was going to explode into 3 or 4 in a month. I really dont understand offering a single spider fan. Those things arent big anyway, but grow like weeds. Ive got about 4 clumps of spider fans that Ive got to split up this month, and I groan to myself every time I look at them.

I did post a lot of pictures earlier in the thread because I felt the same way and wanted others to be able to see what they would be getting. If you are considering a purchase you can check here first and ask for advice. I think that is the main purpose of the thread. Some people do have pictures and are always willing to share their experiences and their list of good vendors. Thumbs up

Welcome! ocalagal!!!

I prefer a df also but once in awhile I will purchase a sf. Most of the southern growers send huge single fans. I also think a df seems to do better when newly planted than a sf. I got a sf once that was so puny that I put it in a pot and grew it all summer that way. I was really afraid if I put it in the ground it would be a goner. That was 2 years ago and it is now doing well.

I probably would not buy them if I lived up north, but here in zone 8 they do fine if I get the big ones. I had plenty of double fans that did not bloom either and I do not have a cat to blame. LOL.
But sometimes it is not the plants fault, I should have watered and fertilized more. Plus not all are getting enough sun, I need to move some of them, but not today. Whistling

"Have no patience for bare ground"
If you don't have deep pockets to get the double + fans, then single is the way to go if you want the newer variety. Just have patience. I bought about 20 single fans from "mike144mann" on the LA that I received during the spring of 2011. They are all doing good. I remember the puny plants I got from "Gilbert Wild". Those puny plants are now good size clumps, some of which I have traded to get some newer variety. Some do increase slower than others, but most take off by the second year. And then there are those that for some reason does not like their current location. Once move to a more favorable location they take off as if nothing happened. Instant gratification if for those with deep pockets. Gardening = patience.

I do not like to start with SFs because they seem to take forever to get established and increase here. DFs or more really take off. However, there are times that I must settle for a SF because the DF price is too expensive or the daylily is so new that it is only offered in SFs. I am currently bidding on a SF on the Lily Auction. I know that this seller will send a decent size SF in the spring that may bloom this year depending on its bloom season. It will get plenty of water and fertilizer and hopefully by 2015 be established, have increased, and give us very nice blooms.

So is it better to get a single fan this year and wait for next year for it to bloom, or wait for next year and buy a double fan at what you probably bought the single fan for the prior year and have it bloom that same year?

This can be argued both ways!! Like many, I prefer not to purchase SF's - feeling that two fans have a better chance of succeeding in my climate. BUT, I have sometimes done so if it was something on the "must have now" list. Back in those years when I used to order complete sets of introductions from the big hybridizers, there were of course some SF's that came with the collections since these plants were the newest of the new. The vast majority of them succeeded, but sometimes it did take a couple of years for them to bloom. By then, the same plants were often available on the secondary market as larger plants and more fans, so I'm not sure what I gained. Nowadays, thankfully I don't feel that push to have every new thing out there and am willing to wait a couple of years to see if some of those newer ones have performed well for others. Getting feedback on newer plants BEFORE purchasing, or even waiting to see them succeed if grown locally, has proven to be the best advice that people gave me when I was new to daylilies.

Julie, thats a great point. I used to just have to have the newest ones. I remember one year waffling back and forth...do I pay my truck payment, or do I buy How Beautiful Heaven Must Be?? That darn daylily won out! Now I dont mind waiting a couple of years so I can get a good double fan of a favorite when it shows up on the lily auction.

It does seem it is much easier waiting a few years, since now....to be honest...theres just so few new intros that are that much different from whats already out there. The teethy craze has taken over the seed market it seems. I decided to buy a bunch of seeds this year from newer intros, and it was hard to find some that werent infused with "teeth" in one or both parents. That craze just hasnt touched me yet.

I have been away for a few days. I don't like to buy SFs but sometimes I do. I have had great luck with mine from Tink and Abundantdaylilies on the LA. I do baby them when I plant with lots of compost and TLC thru the summer but then they give me more fans!
