Bill Waldrop currently has a wonderful description, complete with pictures, for the actual initial process used in converting diploids to tetraploids.

http://billsdaylilycorner.blog...

After the initial conversion process it is necessary to wait until the plant blooms again so that he can check the pollen with a microscope to see if it has doubled in size, and that is how he confirms that the plant has been converted.

Could this be what DMSO is?

If so ... how does one obtain it?

Dimethylsulfoxide. I don't know what grade is used for conversion, but Bill Waldrop would be able to answer.

DMSO is typically used for a couple of purposes. It is a pretty powerful solvent used in biology and chemistry. Additionally, for biological purposes it is used as a cell penetrant. It can readily pass through cell membranes and help convey chemicals into cells.

We buy it at the feed store; it is used for joint pain in animals and people use it for a wide range of things.

DMSO 99.9% Liquid can be helpful for relieving pain, inflammation, scleroderma, and interstitial cystitis however, intended use is as a solvent only and the choice of using it in other applications is the sole responsibility of the user. DMSO has been used for over 100 years in the United States. It is a natural substance derived from wood pulp and is harmless when used with the proper precautions. DMSO 99.9% Liquid is sold as a solvent and is an amazing substance that has many uses throughout the world. Dimethyl Sulfoxide is a clear liquid known for its ability to permeate living tissue. It is believed to help stimulate cellular processes.

Daylily people have used it with rust chemicals, BAP, conversion chemicals, etc. to help the chemicals penetrate quicker/easier into the plant. The BIG PRECAUTION IS that anything that is mixed in with the DMSO can and will penetrate into your skin/body if you get it on you so you have to be very careful with it.

This looks like the one Bill uses, but you can get any brand that is 99% pure or 99.9% pure

For what it's worth as well, when using DMSO it is not the DMSO per se that is dangerous, it is the possibility that what is in solution with the DMSO can readily gain access as a result.

Also, not all gloves are created equally. It is best to check the chemical rating of the particular gloves prior to use. For example most nitrile and latex gloves are suitable for short or small exposures to DMSO but the solvent will eat through those gloves in a matter of minutes.

Bill has in the past also added red food coloring to the Colchicine I would assume so he can see where it is actually at and if it is all absorbed. I don't know if he still uses it or not

Sure Fred, I'd LOVE to kill your daylilies Rolling on the floor laughing But seriously, if you want me to try I would love to as there will be some of Kim's I will probably want to convert. If you can find out from Larry where he gets the Colchicine and what type of microscope to use and we shall see what we can do

Michele - It would be very cool to have you document on a new thread on this forum the process!

I, for one, would really like to know what you do and the results!

Michele I know Bill Waldrop gets it from Sigma Aldrich. I'd be interested to know what hoops you have to jump through (if any) to get it.

I just went to the Sigma Aldrich website and there really isn't any hoops. When you order online (I would imagine the same goes for calling them to order) for the first time they ask about your organization (type), what your job is there, primary business activities, how you will use their products, and of course your name, address, etc. Then they review the info and if you don't pass the review they may call and ask you more question. It's a lot less than I thought they would ask Shrug!

That's interesting. I stopped when one place had a line about shipping to a residential address. Maybe I will have to pursue it further.
