Teresa, Hemlady is right. It is a poppy. It is so called Super Poppy Shasta. Introduced by Thompson and Morgan I believe awhile back.
Lovely seedlings Fred.

Arlene - Yes, I was aware that when I won the auction for the EMERALD STARBURST x CRADLE OF BETHLEHEM seeds that they were dormants. I have other dormants too that I received from Sandi and Mike, but typically they will bloom at least once before they croak on me, so that I can attempt to pollinate the bloom with an evergreen or use the pollen on an evergreen bloom. That is the plan anyway ... I love the green throats, so that was why I went ahead and bid on that particular auction. Luckily, I won it cheap, so if they die before 3 years, at least I can say I tried to use those genes in future hybrids. You never know until you try ....

Mike - I need to sprinkle some of my poppy seeds around. I didn't do it this past winter and missed having poppies blooming in March and April. Thanks for reminding me with your beautiful photo!

I ran across these website blogs. Most interesting ...

This blog had lots of photos:

I got a kick out of this site because of the re-purposing of ice cream containers:

3 years ago I bought this cross from Rich Howard
(Ruffled Strawberry Parfait X Fantastic Fringe) 3 of the 5 seeds grew to blooming size seedlings last summer, other 2 seeds were either bad or didn't make it, all 3 moved to keeper bed
I consider it to be my best auction buy ever.

I'm pretty happy about how these turned out.

Fred, too bad that you can't get Ruffled Strawberry Parfait to grow for you, here it starts the end of August, and while it's still hot the edge shows quite a few teeth that gradually go away as the weather starts to cool

Ed - All 3 of those Ruffled Strawberry Parfait seedlings are beautiful! Wow! You hit the lotto on those.

I have bought a few different seed crosses from Rich and I have gotten 100% germination so far. Now is the wait to see if they make it here and what the blooms will look like. In fact, I am currently growing over 200 seedlings from various folks. Most were shared with me from members here, but I did purchase a few seeds from LA to get some other genes I wanted to use in my own hybrids. Such fun! Ya never know what you are gonna get with hybrids seeds! Lovey dubby Thumbs up

I make enough seeds that I can sell on the auction, but when I can get the genetics from plants that I don't have I will buy some seeds also.
I especially like finding "fancy southern bred to northern or proven hardy" crosses as it probably gives me the best chance of getting genetics that I normally wouldn't of been able to get.
I also like to buy seeds from the newer $100/$200 types because it is the cheapest way to get a head start, and unless I win the lottery which I don't play, it will only way until the price comes down

This one was from back in the day Hurricane Swirls was hot, seedling does real well up here
Double dose of Angels Smile 'hard dormant' was what sold me

I'm up in the north and I have seedlings that are going to be four years old this coming summer. My estimation would be at least 6-7 years before I register them and have enough to sell. Here it take 2 years before I see bloom on my seedlings. I don't use a greenhouse or lights to grow my seeds. I just plant them in beer cups and put them in a south facing window.

I clean my seedling bed out after the second year of bloom. Most of the plants are just blooming for the first time. Yes I know this is brutal , but I don't have much room and I make lots of seeds every year , so I need to keep the rotation going.

Joe - Welcome!

Do they grow & bloom faster in the beer cups in the window? Inquiring minds want to know! How cold does it get up there in Ontario in the Winters?
