I should have entered them as Viola cornuta rather than Viola x wittrockiana.

Are all the Violas in the Sorbet series in the same species? If so I can change them all in one fell swoop.

Thanks. Yes, they are all in the same species ... but I need to change those just added to put the trade names in the right place. I also now have the cultivar numbers to go in as well. Maybe best to just delete those I added and I'll resubmit them correctly?

All set Tee.
Just a note; after entering a Series name, don't include it in the Trade name as well.
ex. Viola (Viola cornuta Sorbet™ White Babyface)
The system will automatically display the Series name followed by the Trade name. I'll remove "Sorbet™" from the Trade name field once you've had a look.

Tee, Another tip about the way the system works.

Series names are not added to the "displayed name" when no Trade name is listed. In other words, a Series name and a Cultivar name do not display together.
ex.
Viola Angel™ Amber Kiss
To be displayed like this you would be enter;
Latin name: Viola
Cultivar Name: Amber Kiss
Series name: Angel™
Trade name: Amber Kiss
Frankly there is the assumption that Amber Kiss is a cultivar name. We don't know that, see below.

Another common occurrence is a plant where the Latin name and a Trade name are known. We know it's a Trade name because it's trademarked (Cultivar names can't be trademarked). Breeders often don't publish Cultivar names but use the Trade names instead. If the plant is PPAF, they usually wait for the patent application to be approved and only then list the patented Cultivar name.

Please note that all varieties must have a Cultivar name! A Trade name alone is not accepted. Because of this state of affairs when a plant is proposed and the name is trademarked, you must include that name in the Cultivar and Trade name fields. Consider the Cultivar name a placeholder until (if) the true Cultivar name is known.

ex. Grandiflora Petunia (Petunia Ultra™ Crimson Star) In this case Ultra could be a Series name, Crimson Star could be a cultivar name or Trade name but Ultra™ Crimson Star cannot be a Cultivar name because of the trademark.

Plants with active registration authorities are more easily dealt with but this system allows users to propose plants for which dinitive information is not available.

Additionally regarding Viola Angel™ Amber Kiss.

I believe this is a FloraNova introduction. I can't find an example right now but if I remember correctly, some patented plants they have displayed have the Cultivar name in the upper right. In the case of Angel™ Amber Kiss that name would coincide with the "name" VIO142. I'll need to dig some more or maybe send them a note. Have you come across anything like this?

Do you mean other than with FloraNova? I understand that to be the patent number but wonder if that could possibly be their own inventory number or something else.

I don't understand.
I've sent an email to them about Amber Kiss and their site in general. VIO142 doesn't show up in a patent search at USPTO. Maybe PPAF or inventory?

That's what I was wondering - if it could be their own inventory number or identifier.

I've heard back from Floranova. Here's their answer.

"Angel is the series name. Amber Kiss is the Color Description / item name. VIO142 is the item number. So, the cultivar name is actually Viola Angel Amber Kiss."

I replied questioning the use of the trademarked symbol for the series name on other sites and pointing out that cultivar names can't be trademarked. I've yet to hear back.
