I just really don't have the room for indoor seed starting. I have kicked around the idea of making a old window GH. Or at least a cold frame.

For me, it depends on how much time I have in the spring, and what I'm trying to grow.

When I'm busy, I'll direct sow anything I can, like hardy annuals and most vegetables.

When I was trying to get into Salvias, indoors under lights.

Delphiniums indoors, because otherwise the slugs will mow them off at ground level as soon as they merge.

I see old windows offered for free often on Craig's list.

If you're search Craig's list, also search for sliding glass shower doors. They're big and sturdy.

I gave one away because it's easier to get in and out (and hang laundry to dry) with a plastic shower curtain.

Habitat for Humanity "Restores" are great places for bargains on new and used construction stuff. I get most of my mini-blind slats there, and keep checking for fluorescent fixtures.

I am at Vanderbilt with my sister the last few days. I brought my Stokes and Pinetree seed catalogs. Is Pinetree and Seedsavers the same? They are based in Glouster, Maine. Anyone use them much?

Karen, have you ordered from them before? Anyone? I see a couple of heirlooms I would like to try and they have soap making supplies.

I have ordered from Pinetree. No issues. Been a couple of years, but everything grew.

I've bought seeds from lots of different vendors and my experience has been that, generally speaking, the main concerns are price and selection. I've almost never bought seeds that didn't grow. I did once buy a packet of 4 o'clock seeds from Harris that were all duds, but they refunded the purchase price with no problem. (Wish I could say the same for Summerhill...but that was several years ago.) Unless it's something really exotic and you're concerned about getting the right plant, seeds are pretty safe from just about any vendor. With the possible exception of some of the folk selling seeds on ebay. I've gotten some strange and exotic things from ebay. Hilarious!
Confidence is that feeling you have right before you do something really stupid.

Yes, Teresa, I've bought from Pinetree over the years and been happy with them. Their best feature, I think, is the ability to buy small amounts of seeds cheaply. Smiling

Ok, I will place a small order with them. I liked that if your order was small it didn't start at 7.95 for shipping. Geez!

OK, Christmas is past lol. Now some downtime for me. I will be dragging those catalogs back out.
I am dreaming of white marigolds. Do they come in a smaller version? I grew several large ones a couple yrs back. I think they would look nice in front of my daylily collection. I need something that would add color in the fall when the dls are done.

I don't know about white marigolds, Teresa. I hope you find some. They would be pretty! I'm interested in finding dwarf daisies. I have Shasta daisies that grow taller than my daylilies. They completely miss the point of being companions! I have heard about dwarf daisies that bloom all summer, but haven't found them yet. I would think that white marigolds would do a fine job, too!

I grew them once and mine were about 3 foot tall plants. They were pretty but more like a shrub. I've never seen short white ones.
