Tarev I think this is its color! On the Aridlands website it describes this as gray black...and, on ATP its considered a synonym for H coarctata (which is green - so not even sure how I'm going to add this one to my plant list - I've seen these but never in this color!) I'll keep this page posted as it changes Thumbs up

Oh, it would be fun to watch and observe!

Somehow it reminds me of my Haworthia reinwardtii, when it got into that similar color, don't know if it is related to the age of the plant or what, but other half returned to green as weather warmed up, other one stayed that reddish color:

Yes it does look just like that!! What do the tops of your reinwardtii look like?? Cause this one does a little spiral thing!

These ones do not go spirally, just upright, growing like a tight clenched claw:
Photo Oct 2014, some parts still reddish, some now green. The two older ones keeps being pushed apart as new babies form at the base.

They sure are pretty Tarev! They are similar but mine also has tighter leaves I think. I know once I have babies coming in that they will probably do the same thing, pushing momma out of the way Hilarious!

So many of my Aloe and Haqorthias has turned that dark purple color. I know where they are at is too cold for them. (60) Hopefully next year I'll have my bottom heaters working and keeping them in better shape. I also lost about 10% of my Asapelas seedlings. Base rot.

All 3 of the haws you all mentioned above, are related, some list them as ssp, others as 3 or more species, they all spiral, but it's just not so noticeable...the leaves on gregs are flat folded and popped out, haws are just so variable, and interbreedable, DNA research is already showing some wild results!
Reinwartii, coarctata, and any synonyms or related species will actually take neat full sun, and require more than the low growing types.
A good example of the plants telling you what they like, the tiny window types, like to hide from the sun, and our eyes! While the above group grows tall thru the brush to get more sun. Cool plants!
Mine aren't looking so hot right now, I leave mine pretty dry over winter, a lot of times you can pull the plant right out of the soil this time of year... All the succulent, but tender roots will die, but the tough leaves and gnarled base will hang on and pump out fresh roots soon, it defiantly sets them back but better safe than rotted, they really recover from this type of abuse.
Rot can run up the stubby stem and take em down before you spot it!
It's a real bummer!
It did teach me to that haw leaves root! The window types can be tricky tho! Great vids on YouTube!
After I figured that out I had to keep from picking them to pieces!

I really expect that if things keep pace, there's going to be done downright amazing hybrids!
There already is!
The process from seed to mature form is about 6 years!
I'm sure there's 1000's of promising seedlings around the world now maturing as we speak, given the current price of some I bet there's tons of them being planted right now!

Swayback what a great thought re: seedlings in waiting, and getting ready to be debuted soon!! Thanks for the info! I too have kept mine really dry this year, and they aren't looking to great, but tomorrow I'm moving most of them outside, into a semi shade area, so they'll bounce back quickly!
Can't wait to see what happens during the summer with my plants! Thumbs up

I will agree on keeping them so dry in winter that they can be plucked from the soil with no root mass. I have always had better success with that. I didn't 'learn' that but found it out due to my neglect. Love these plants that can stand my abuse.
Good info ~ thanks much...

Kate, it reminds me of Haworthia cuspidata..but could also be an emelyae..so many hybrids out there. I take a look at this site too to compare my plants with : http://haworthia.org/Gallery/

Same story here, for a few years it really bugged me that my haws lost their roots each winter, certainly it slowed their growth, if you have the right conditions, you can water them a lot in winter, supposedly they're winter growers, but they grow five here in summer too, I think it's more of a reference to them coming from the Southern Hemisphere.
Anyway, without ideal conditions in winter it's risky to water them more, I thought I'd try to keep their roots alive one year... Instead I managed to rot the darn things off at the ground, now that was a setback!
