Double King from Royal Colors, Big bold red-orange double. The orange (rust) tones get more intense as it ages. The edges ruffle as the bloom gets older.

Arrangement for my Xmas buffet table. Top to bottom, Tinkerbell, Avanti, Siberia, with a lone Marilyn, and Pink Rival. I just throw whatever is in bloom in a vase, the colors always seem to blend so nicely. A great way to display the blooms without putting up with fungus gnats ( from the potted bulbs) dive bombing the dinner guests. Thumb of 2013-12-22/bsharf/cfc867 Enjoy your holiday celebrations.

Yes indeed, collecting more is very tempting, I am good for this year, mainly because I can't have them shipped here without freezing! Rolling on the floor laughing

Moon Scene from Easy to Grow Bulbs Midsize dark pink (red) and white with a red picotee edge. Waiting for Party and Diva to bloom. Then my new ones will be finished. I've been planting them outside as soon as they are done blooming. One big advantage of living in Florida.

Lovely Barbara... it's great the picotee goes around the all white parts as well as the more colored parts..
Ive a question... or two... OK it's great you get to plant them outside ... for sure... but you're far enough north you get it freezing there right... is it just brief and the ground is always above freezing... and say you put them in now when they stop flowering...they have leaves then.. and they keep the leaves on all the time... ? and when might you expect to see them bloom again for you..
just trying to figure out how far south I have to move,,

We're in zone 9A and the ground never freezes hard. But we do get 6-8 nights of frost each winter. Occasionally we will get down into the 20s all night, which is the most dangerous for the bulbs. When a hard freeze is predicted I do cover the Amaryllis beds with dry leaves that I keep for the purpose, I pull the leaves away when the daytime temps get above 40. Temps down into the 20s will turn any leaves into mush, but the inside of the bulb is fine. I also plant the bulbs deeper than I have them in the pots, only the neck is above the ground and I use a inch of bark mulch over the bed. The newly planted bulbs will continue to put up new leaves this spring but I do not expect them to bloom again until the spring of 2015, perhaps not until later. Bulbs have been forced for this winter's bloom and they are pretty much depleted of food stores. It takes a good long while for them to recover and go on to form new buds. The buds are formed the year before they emerge to bloom. I've said before that about 1/4 of the bulbs go on to be spectacular in the garden, 1/2 do OK, and 1/4 never bloom again or die. Even in Florida, Amaryllis do have a short dormancy, where the leaves die back. I'm sure it has to do with shorter days and dryness, since winter is our "dry" season. Here it is Dec-Feb, frost just speeds up the process a bit causing the leaves to die back.

Thanks Barbara... your managment techniques is much as I'd imagine... you'd have to do... interesting that 1/4 of them just fizzle out... does this seem to by by type.. or an individual bulb afliction.... thanks.. i was wondering about dormancy in an all the time growing..now I have a better understanding of them over years of full time growth.. outside..

The hardiness is bulb specific. Some are hardier and more adaptable than others: In addition, too many bulbs are diseased when shipped or damaged during shipping (we've all gotten bulbs that have been partially rotten) These diseased bulbs usually bloom but will continue to rot away. I get the sense that commercial breeders value bloom quality over plant hardiness. Remember that most "Xmas" Amaryllis are discarded after they bloom in the house. Health, hardiness and adaptability do not become issues until you attempt to save the bulb to rebloom. When I lived in Pennsylvania I discarded my Xmas Amaryllis. I couldn't be bothered to keep them in pots and fool with the dormancy issue. I only started enjoying their flowers each spring when I could plant them outside. The 1/4 loss is the price I pay for letting nature take care of the dormancy issue.

This is only my 3rd year growing Amaryllis bulbs, to date I have not lost any of the 12 in my collection, maybe beginners luck, my 2 original bulbs bloomed beautifully for me last year after a rest in a cool dark cabinet. So far this year all are doing great, I have taken them out one or two at a time and potted them up, so far 3 out of 5 have bloom stalks the other 2 have leaves, hopefully they too will get bloom stalks.

You must be doing something right, since your bulbs sound very happy. Its gives you a real sense of satisfaction to get the bulbs to bloom again.

Well...I left the north to spend New years day with mother in AL... so now I see the second new one is blooming.. my plant/cat sitter sent me a few pictures of Chico... it will likely open up some and color out..the lighting here is very yellow ..the result of it being under a High Pressure Sodium [flowering ] bulb

Given the current popularity of Zombie movies and TV shows, in the yellow lighting, your Chico could be a Zombie Chico. LOL. Yesterday, I received a Diva bulb from RC: the replacement for the mislabeled one earlier in the season. Sadly, the bottom half of the bulb was completely mushy, looks as if it got frozen in shipment. When that can happen on the way to Florida, makes one very hesitant to order any more Amaryllis bulbs this winter. These bulbs can be ruined by sitting out on a loading dock, in an unheated truck, or outside someone's home for too long.
