Charleen - Your brugs look great! Mine are in containers that may be too small for the roots, but they are doing pretty good except for the largest one. Anyone here have experience growing them in containers instead of the ground? I could sure use some advice!

That is how I grew mine Becky and it grew in it for much longer than I imagined it would I just potted it up in a pot at least twice the size of the first one, it takes a lot of water and it gets really sad looking in the winter but boy when sporing hits!!It shot up like a weed.

Good morn ing all.
Becky I raised all mine in pots except for a couple I put in the ground for the summer and dug back up in the fall but that's a lot of work, much better to leave in the pot, they need a large enough pot so they do not get pot bound, I fertilized mine every week in the summer with MG and they need a lot of water, set the pot outside when you can, they grow much faster.

After hearing that many of you grow some or all in pots, I feel better! Whew! Most of mine look okay. Some have bloomed several times already. I have mostly NOID brugs that were cuttings a kind lady here sent to me! She lost the tags on hers, but I don't care whether I know their names or not. I just enjoy the blooms so much!

One of the NOIDs had fat buds which produced fat blooms. I never realized how different some of the buds/blooms can look compared from one plant to another. I have also noticed a fragrance difference. This fat bloom brug has two-toned flowers. It's first for me! I was so impressed with it! I love it when it blooms!

Then I have the skinny blooms on another brug. The leaves are still pretty sparse, too. But I haven't killed it yet! Hilarious!

HI, everyone, see alot of familiar faces here! Hey Doris, hi Misti, Becky, Jan, and all.
Charleen, your brugs are looking good. Can you believe our last frost was in late Feb- nearly two months before our last frost date in April. Mine are blooming, Serendipity is blooming here in North Georgia same as yours- wonder do they have an internal clock.

I have grown my brugs in pots for several years. When we have a cooler summer (seldom) it is great but the plants do suffer in the heat of a normal Georgia summer. Mine are all in big 5-15 or even 20 gallon pots. When I got them out of the greenhouse in March, I left them in pots. By beginning of May, my grandson and DIL had helped me get most of them into the ground. The ones left in pots, around 20 plants, I planted inpatiens in to shade the black pots. I got that idea from Gary who is a very talented brugmansia hybridizer living in central Florida, Becky. I think it is a great idea to keep the sun off the brug pots and the brugs shade the impatiens. And bloom all summer! Since the impatiens will get so big, I only put one in each pot and plant it on the side that gets the most sun. I fertilize on the opposite side of the pot away from the impatiens plant, so the impatiens does not get so much fertilizer as the brugs will take. So far, so good. Another thing, I use a time release on my brugs in the Spring. I have just now started using Miracle Grow, and will do like Doris, once a week. I also add granular Ironite to my potting soil mix- the ironite has additional minerals, trace minerals. Mix in according to directions.

BTW, I do have a strong young grandson to help me get the brugs up in the Fall. You met him last summer, Charleen! Those of you in more northern climes should not have any trouble growing your brugs in pots that you adjust for the size of your plants.

Charleen, when am I gonna meet Charlie? Road trip?????

Yes, most all brugs start out either white or yellow, then will turn colors! That is half the fun, waiting to see what color they will be! And they all have different scents too!

Here is Serendipity. Brenda, come on down and I'll introduce you to Charley. You don't even have to bring cookies, I keep them on hand for him......
Your Grandson was a very nice young gentleman. I keep the plants I got from you in pots and they are growing. I think I only lost Naughty Nick, He hasn't come up from roots yet. I think there was three but everything else looks great and stil in pots but in ground.....

Thanks everyone for your suggestions and advice!

Charleen - Your lush brugs is what I want mine to look like. More foliage along with the blooms. The foliage is pretty scarce on mine. Maybe I am not fertilizing enough. Confused

Yes! The blooms do start off white and then change to whatever color they are going to be.

Brenda - Good idea about shading the pots with other plants. I have most of my brugs growing in sun half of the day and the other half in shade from a large Oak tree. I know from past experience that the sun and heat is too harsh for them to get direct sunlight all day especially in summer. The good thing about containers is that you can move them when necessary!
