Seed Propagation of Hardy Succulents

By BlueFox
July 15, 2010

I propagate hardy succulents such as Sempervivum, Jovibarba and Rosularia from seed to give me a chance of getting some exciting new types as well as a very economical way to get lots of plants. Using seed is a way to get many choices, some of them different and unusual. Sometimes you get lots of very similar types, but that’s okay; use them in tapestry beds, mosaics and other crafts.

I now know why my babies all died...I planted the poor things in a spongy mix and they drowned.

I don't have snow here so I was surprised they survive being blanked with the white stuff all winter.

Great article Jacki, I now feel excited about trying something new in my (limited) experience. Can't wait to get seed and try this new way of growing semps. I will have to see if I can find a source of Rosularia seed also. I would love to have some of the different types. It is very hard to find much infomation on them.
Thank you so much for writing this article and getting me motivated to try something new.

It is difficult to find these types of seeds - try alpine nurseries, they sometimes have a variety of hardy succulents, so it's worth a try. Otherwise, there are not a lot around - I think we're onto something...

I'm glad I could motivate and inspire you to try some other crafts, Zanymuse, Bubbles and Lynn - and any time you want some snow, I get lots here.

Seeds can in some cases be shipped between countries relatively easily, so if possible I'll try and locate some more, or harvest my own.

Jacki, wonderful article. I've never tried them from seed either, but will definitely do so now!

Love your website. The rustic twig crafts are gorgeous! I like the aloe in your succulent wreath too - never would have thought of that. Can't wait to spend more time exploring your website too!

Thanks for the great article!
