For those of you in the path of this brutal arctic blast of cold air, keep in mind that IF you are storing your tropical plants in an unheated garage or attic, you may lose most if not all of your plants. Three years ago, I lost dozens of plumeria stored in the garage and attic (placed on top of heating ducts!) when we had similar temperatures over a two-day period. Your garage and attic will get down to about the same temperature as that outside.

Thanks for that Ken! I'm spending today making sure all are well hydrated and moved in/covered. I was also thinking that might not be enough for some of them! Guess I'll be keeping my fingers crossed! Right now "they" are saying lows of anywhere from 18* to 27* for a couple of nights! Brrr!

Our forecast says 12 for tomorrow night. My tactic for my mini garden outside (can't be moved anywhere more sheltered) is that I haven't watered it for weeks, cover with a sheet kind of backed up to a leaky window, with a giant tub of water under it, and a few dark rocks. So far so good, but 12 is way different than 22. If there was a way to plug electrical stuff in out there, I would run an aquarium heater in the tub of water.

If I was hoping an attached garage would help, I would try to put stuff up off of the floor, where the coldest air would be. That could make a difference. An unattached shed or garage, I wouldn't have much hope.

TY Ken for trying to save those plants out there!

It is -27ยบC, which is -17ยบF in Calgary this morning. Forecast is for +5ยบC/+41ยบF for a high tomorrow. Next week should have highs above freezing 0ยบC/+32ยบF. Thank goodness for the deep snow cover to protect the plants from the huge temperature swings. This is what happens in the Chinook belt.

Tiffany, can you run an extension cord from your house to your GH? Just hanging a 100-150W light bulb should/would keep your temperature inside the GH above freezing.

TY, Ken, but I only wish I had a greenhouse. All of my plants are in the house except the big mini garden. Will see what happens! Good luck everyone!
