Spent an enjoyable day outside today listening to all the birds and the pair of Piliated Woodpeckers singing away. Moved all my seedlings outside to enjoy some sunshine. Spent the majority of the day building a 10 foot X 4 foot raised bed in the garden. The garden beds look so much nicer when they are contained. It's off to get more wood tomorrow so we can make another large and raise the front beds. Dug out about 16 5gallon pails worth of Compost and got it added to the garden.

Would really like to plant some veggies in the garden but next weeks weather is looking mighty chilly for the evening hours. I do have radishes that just came up along with some swiss chard that sprouted from last year. My oregano lived through the winter outside under a glass dome packed with straw.

I want to plant turnips again. The turnips were great last year but that was the first time I have ever planted them. Might as well as I have lots of seed.

Turnips come in white or the more common pink with parts in white bi-colors.

Turnips? You can use them in soups (yummy) or add them to roasted root veggies. Or even boil like boiled potatoes and them mash them.

I need to grow Turnips just to get over the fear of having to eat them when I was younger. My mom would boil them, mash them, put butter on them and then tell me it was some new potato she bought. To me it was GAG!!!!!!! Worst part was the dog wouldn't even eat it as I tried to slip in under the table. I can still remember the day as if it was yesterday when I stuffed the Turnips down my underwear then excused myself so I could flush it down the toilet. Mom caught on as all Mom's know everything that goes on. Growing up you ate what was on your plate or else. I'm hoping they taste 100% better home grown than store bought. Beets was another one of those foods I couldn't get down. I love growing beets now once I found out how good they are diced and roasted with a little salt and pepper.

Sorry to tell you they taste pretty much the same from the store or from the garden. Sorry you don't like them.

Between the weekend and today we managed to get 3 new raised beds erected and filled in with Compost. Planted some peas, red beet greens, swiss chard, Kale and some lettuce. Everything is covered over with straw so hopefully the rain and cold won't effect the seeds from sprouting when it gets warmer. All my other seedlings have been brought inside so they are protected from the elements for a few days.

Rita I'm hoping my palette has changed over the years. If nothing else I'll give them to my Dad who loves them.

Karen, that was a funny story! My Mom never cooked white turnips, only rutabagas, but I liked those...beets, too! The only vegetable I have a hard time with is Brussels sprouts.....

Hilarious! I love brussels sprouts! Hilarious!

So glad that I did get those veggie beds done and fertilized in the past few days as the rain is coming down crazy today and will wash in my fertilizer. And water my seeds that I planted.

Oh yummy!!!! Roasted Brussels Sprouts tossed with a bit of coconut oil, sea salt and a bit of pepper is one of my favorites. I grew Brussels Sprouts two years ago. They take forever to grow and got huge but homegrown are the best.

Rita same here. It's pouring!!!! I added all my amendments to the soil over the past two weeks, Bone Meal, Coffee Grinds, Blood Meal, and a large layer of my Black Gold (compost)....The rain is doing nicely to settle it all in. I won't fertilize with fish fertilizer or compost tea till the plants are established. My peas and radishes growing in buckets are up!

You know you are a dedicated veggie gardener when your standing outside in the pouring rain dumping a large bag of veggie scraps from work and stealing your neighbors leaf bags(who don't use chemicals on there lawn or yard) so you can cover it.

Brussell sprouts take a while to gro but can take a coupls of frosty mornings too. As a matter of fact, they are sweeter if a frost has hit them.

Karen, this guy crosses our property at least onnce a day. It makes me think of your screen name. :)

I tried growing them once but they take the entire season and more. Just take so long to grow. Maybe I might try again who knows.

I did get my bales of straw that I use as mulch for the veggie garden.

My spring peas are comming up well.
