The search-ability of the ATP Database is one of the things that makes it really special.

Want a light blue TB with purple based foliage? Go to the Iris Database and click "Search by characteristics" as Greg explained above and click the boxes for Tall Bearded under Classification, Light Blue under Bloom Color, and Purple Base under Foliage and you'll get a list of tall bearded irises with light blue flowers and purple based foliage.

Want to see Keith Keppel's plicatas? Type Keppel in the Hybridizer field and click the box for Plicata under Flower Patterns and there they are.

In many ways, the Iris Database is extremely complete. If an iris has been registered by AIS, it should be in the database already (not counting the 2014 registrations, information on them isn't available online yet). Dave was also able to import a lot of information for many of the entries. Most irises registered from 1950 through 2012 already have the Hybridizer, Year of Registration, Year of Introduction, Seedling Number, Classification, Hardiness, Registered Height, and Parentage fields filled in. Information on some other fields, like Flower Color and Flower Form, had to be added manually. At lot of work has been done on that, but much remains. All of the information on irises register prior to 1950 is going to have to be added manually, that's going to take awhile. Blinking

Brad mentioned above, or in another thread, the hyperlinks in the Parentage and Child Plants fields. That's an amazing feature if you are interested in hybridizing or tracing the background of irises.

Loved 'American Maid'. Unusual flower color.

Funny story--one year I didn't know why the flower was not open. When I checked the stem, it was frozen solid. It felt like an iron bar. So I cut the stem & the foliage was still doing well. It bloomed well the following year.

Here is a picture of American Maid from my garden in 2012. Unfortunately, it has not survived through 2013, so I am going to have to find it again this spring.
Mary Ann,
I know you wanted a piece of AM when you saw it blooming in my garden in 2012, however, you will have to wait a few more years for me to be able to give you some.

Mary Ann,
I would certainly like to get a piece of your American Maid if you have sufficient stock. I hope this spring to be able to drive over to your place during bloom season, as its been a one way street in the other direction for the past few years. As you stated in a thread somewhere, I would also like to visit Marvin Davis garden to see some of these beautiful seedlings he has. Maybe we can make a day trip if we find out.

Paul,
I am just an amateur hybridizer that happens to grow a large number of TB irises. I enjoy photography, and in the last couple of years I have started photographing the blooms with either a black velvet background or cream colored background depending on the bloom colors to make the picture "pop" more. My hybridizing efforts were reported in a Tall Talk magazine article a couple of years ago, and this winter, I have started my seedlings as you described in a thread last year with some details you provided me in a tree mail. I am currently gathering pictures of this effort, and plan to submit another article later this year. I became involved with the TBIS several years ago and enjoy participating in this society. As I mentioned in another thread last month, the spring TBIS meeting this year is in Salem, OR just before the Region 13 AIS meeting in Portland. Bus tour visits will be to Schreiner's, Mid-America, Keppel's, and Vaughn's gardens. Details can be found at http://www.tbisonline.com/

Hi Dennis. I will certainly share a rhizome of American Maid if she's large enough to divide this year. If not -- next year for sure. Don't forget -- I already promised you a rhizome of Beverly Sills! Smiling

I would love to make a day-trip together to visit Marvin and see his Irises -- if he's willing. I don't *do* airplanes -- so the only hybridizer gardens I get to see are the ones I can drive to. I can only dream about the gardens on the west coast -- and enjoy them vicariously through photos.

You're welcome to visit my Iris gardens any time, Dennis. They aren't the professionally laid-out beds like yours are -- but the Irises are beautiful none-the-less. And some of them you'll recognize!! nodding

Does anybody have the iris "Transworld"? Be on the lookout as Marvin would like to re-acquire this early introduction of his.

I had a brief possibility in Margie Valenzuela (she posted a picture of it to "Dave's Garden") but she never had it.
