My philosophy about life: Be kind to others ... and to yourself! Always try to be the best YOU! Leave negativity behind, life is just too short for negativity. Spend time listening to nature, whether it's the birds singing, or just the peace and quiet of your own backyard. Learn to forgive.

My philosophy about age: It's just a number. There's nothing we can do about the age we are ... except wish we were some other age! Some days I feel 32, other days 102! Today I feel about 102 because I spent 5 hours out working in the yard and my entire body aches.

Good Morning!
I'm 60. I am happily separated. I have one son (44), two grandchildren, 6 and 7, who live in Maryland. I love to travel - both road trips and to other countries. My longest road trip was from Miami to Las Vegas. I've lived in Virginia, Maryland, DC, Florida, Nevada, Texas, Missouri, and Illinois. I've been to Paris, London, Heidelberg, the Hague, Vienna, Cairo, and Costa Rica. I have a burning desire to go to Italy and to Madagascar, Africa. I love food, but indulging has been curved by my Diabetes. I enjoy gardening, mostly rare palms, aroids, citrus and succulents. I'm about to start a new venture in sewing. I have a toy poodle. I am retired, but miss work and if the job market would turn around, would consider going back as an executive assistant/administrative assistant. I dabbled in Real Estate for a few years, but found it to be less lucrative than expected. Bad timing!

Hi everyone,

I just joined this morning. My name is Elaine and I am 61 and a retired technology executive. I love daylilies and I am regional president of the American Daylily Society. I love gardening and cooking. I have a Siamese cat named Sushi and two Pomeranian puppies that have proven to be quite a handfull. I garden on a typical urban corner lot in St. Petersburg. I am divorced (many years ago) and have a daughter and 3 3 grand daughters. I miss working and am looking for something to do from home. If you have a suggestion, let me know.

Hi Elaine,
Welcome to the group. Maybe you can give me some advice on Daylilies for our area.
I have just about given up on them. The only ones I could ever get to bloom were the ditch lilies. I finally dug them all up and stuck them in pots till I could decide what to do with them.

Hi Elaine!

I was clicking on the random cubit link last night and found this one you might be interested in: http://cubits.org/inhome_jobs/... with ideas for folks who want to work from home!

I live in Daytona Beach and would love to learn about Day Lilies that would possibly grow in my area. I planted a few bulbs here years ago but don't remember why they didn't survive. I think they lasted one season but never came back again ... possibly the bulbs got covered with too much mulch and were too deep to re-sprout.

Anyway, welcome to Cubits .. you will love it here!

Hi Jan and Lin,

Thanks for the welcome. The most important thing you have to know about growing daylilies here is that you must select the evergreen varieties. There are dormants, semi-evergreens and evergreens. Do not buy daylilies from the box stores. There are lots of daylily sellers in our area. Most daylillies are mail order and are shipped bare root. Check out this link.....

http://bads.us/growing.html

This is from my club's website, the Bay Area Daylily Society. It has good information on growing daylilies. There is also a page on this site with local seller information.

Good luck with your daylilies and let me know if I can help you with them.

My name is Hetty and I was quite surprised to find last fall that I turned 60. Surely they must be talking about someone else? But 60 it is... and there are days that I too feel like 100 when I have overdone it in the yard.
I am originally from Holland but haven't lived there since I was 24... and don't go back anymore since my DM passed away.
I have been married for 27 years and have a 22 year old son who will (if all goes as planned) graduate this summer and will then hopefully be off our payroll. Phew.
My hobbies are gardening - especially plumeria but all other tropical blooming plants, and classical music, especially opera. I was retired but went back to work part-time last year and am quite enjoying my job at the Naples Botanical Garden. Enough hours to keep me in plant-money and not so many that I have no time to play in my yard!

The plumeria in the picture below is named 'Henriette' (my birth name) for me by my dear friend Luc who runs Florida Colors nursery.
