Calin, I have both the cold temps (high of 6F here today) and the snow. Its just that the snow isn't covering the lily beds where I need it. The ground is bare from high winds in the area where the newest OT lily seedlings are growing. Growing a few seeds is where it all starts!!

Lorn, Always trying to improve on the pix. I try to take as many as I can to reference back to my hybridizing records. Occasionally I get to take a few pix of things in the front garden (the only garden that isn't a lily garden).

Tracey, Thanks. I have contributed to the seed exchange for many years. I hope many others can get the lily seed growing addiction. Pic below is of two very different growing sdlgs, both from div I asiatics.

Øystein, Thanks for the compliments. Keep me informed as to how the seedlings turn out. ( I had to dig into the toolbox to find the alt code for the diacrytic O.)

Jo Ann, This weekend I start my annual seed planting in the basement under lights. I will continue to post pix as I have time.

Follows are a few pix related to the pink/white/gold brushmark seedling. First is the pollen parent of the cross. Second and third pix are a different cross with this same pollen parent. I think that I can push this line of crosses a bit further.

I am really impressed by your achievements, Hank. I mostly reinvent the wheel with the pollen dabbing that I do. It's fun for me, no matter what happens.

Anthony, Thanks! The white yellow aurelian took fewer crosses to make than I thought it would. Sometimes one just gets lucky.

Rick, Copy/paste would have been too easy, don't know what I was thinking.

Lovey dubby I think I'm in love with the first two!

Imagine those flowers with pedant presentation...

Your 1c seedlings are lovely. Such beautiful spacing. My babies need much better spacing! Do they involve L. leichtlinii? While most of my asiatics have been early, I grew L. leichtlinii this year to give me some late flowering blood for crossing with. It should improve pedicels too I hope.

You're growing some real stunners. Thanks for sharing Smiling

I've never though of L. leichtlinii as possessing desireable pedicels, although they are not bad. The inflorescence is quite blocky, in my opinion.

Different clones, maybe?

Thumb of 2014-01-31/dellac/7e80ba

What I have growing here hasn't the world's best inflorescence, but I like that the pedicels are steep and dark - particular traits that I want. If resulting offspring suggest I need to find a better taper I'll just find better genes somewhere else to plunder for that. Hilarious!

(Sorry I couldn't find a better pic, but this is an L. leichtlinii stem from my garden. Seems different from at least one stem in your pic.)

Della and Rick,
The long pedicel yellow (sdlg 09-514) and its sibling are from my cross 03-408 (Citronella x ( George Slate x Viva)) x sdlg 02-461 1bc dark red, round flat form dark stems. There are a lot of crosses involved. Most have longer pedicels. Lot of variety in my seedlings as I am really shaking up the gene pool.

Thumb of 2014-02-01/hankz/a88bee

Citronella is a selection from ►I (c) Fiesta Hybrids grex Parentage: Contains L. amabile, L. dauricum and L. davidii◄ per the Lily Register

Viva is ► I (c) Viva grexParentage: L. pumilum x L. leichtlinii var. maximowiczii (as "f. unicolor")◄

►George Slate is listed as unknown.◄

Note that all these all are 1c lilies with long pedicels. My cross number for the seedlings in the earlier pic is 09-514. The cross was done specifically to get a breeding line started for 1b and 1c lilies with tall long pedicel inflorescences.

All,

The last post shows why I usually don't give the parentages of the lilies photographed. Having done crosses for this many years has gotten most of the hybrids to the sdlg x sdlg point a few generations ago. It would take me a long time to back through all the crosses to the start. My records are all solid back to 1997. I can trace almost all of them back to their origins, but then I wouldn't get the seeds planted this weekend.

Thanks to all for the nice comments on the lilies and pix.

Thanks for taking the time to outline the history of that particular cross.

I have many seedling x seedling hybrids here now. While I can trace back quite a bit in my head, there are also blank patches where I'm wondering "Where did that come from?" because my earliest records were lost several years ago and then labels where mixed up in moving too many times. I wish I could outline breeding in as much clarity as you do. Very impressive system.

Seed sowing is a fantastic time. Enjoy Hurray!

I really liked the form of 02-461 dark red, and the dark stems with longer pedicels. Here are a couple of further crosses using 02-461 as the pollen parent. Note that the info on these tags shows 02-46 (due to an earlier tag that was broken off between the 6 and 1 on the tag). The correct number is 02-461.

Three pix of 10-498 - Napa Valley x 02-461. Good pedicels and spacing, decent flower form, dark stems with light pastel flowers.

Two pix of 10-501 - George Slate x 02-461. Nice pedicel length good form, dark stems, nice color buds.

Lovely! Especially the white.

Is that tape folded round the stems? I was looking for a good way of identifying individual seedlings at transplant time - might borrow that idea! Big Grin

Della,

The bright orange is a fluorescent tape that I now use to quickly tag plants that I want to keep. It is 1/2" wide and fits one of the small clear hand dispensers. I keep it in my pocket when collecting pollen and taking pix in the garden. Takes but a second or two to tag a plant.
This tape is water resistant and will stay with the plant till the end of the season.

The lighter one with the numbers on it is a small post-it type flag. A quick way to ID plants in the photos. It also can be used to get a quick focus target for the camera when it occasionally has trouble focusing where you want it to. This is not weather resistant and will only last till the next rain.
