And with one or two turns of the crank;....you can revive the substrate in that sifter! Of course you would need to keep your hand on top of the succulents like a bad blender!

The sifter was my mother's and it's about 30 years old. I couldn't part with it and now I don't have to. My mom would have loved it. Here's 2 more new mini planters.

Kim, This is why I have my handy dandy xtra small pruners to get to those succulents hanging "way over" or growing so tall that they might tip the containers. It's also handy to know the growing rate and patterns of succulents you will be using so as to match the scale of the pot to be planted.
My dilemma is wanting to use really small pots and trying to find something tiny that grows well enough, but is slow in growing, matches the scale of the pot and is interesting to me...

I'm surprised Sempervivums can withstand your zone 10A Kim! They frazzle in our 9B Summers or the humidity itself dogs them down even protected!

I have the same problem Bev has, trying to find things that will stay tiny. That is one reason I love Sedum lydium, Sedum dasyphyllum, Sedum 'Limelight' and some of the other types of tiny leaved sedum

David I think the difference is in the humidity. I grew up in the area that Kim lives, the humidity is very low, more of a Mediterranean type climate.

I love your containers, Kim. We used to live near Van Nuys ... I grew lots of succulents and cacti in CA. Still do, but not nearly as many.

They certainly are little jewels. What are you using for planting medium in something that tiny?

Those are adorable, Kim. Two of my favorite things, succulents and shells.

I drill tiny holes in the shells then stuff them with cactus mix. Seems to be working so far. Bev, I'm still experimenting with plants and I did some pruning after I took the last pics. Here's another one. My mom had this abalone shell for about 30 years.
