The Container Rose Garden

By Joannabanana
February 7, 2014

Container gardening has become quite popular and is not limited to annuals alone. I started container gardening with a couple of hybrid tea roses about 10 years ago. Since then, my collection of container roses has expanded from a couple to about 20 pots. Hybrid tea roses, floribunda roses, small shrub roses, and miniatures are all fantastic in containers.

Seems like roses do well in all sorts of situations. Container gardening for roses is a novel idea. Great Garden Article with good information.

Actually I do have a row of 4 Champlain roses in smallish (12inch) pots. But I never move the pots so the roots have grown thru the pots all the way into the ground.

Ha, they have been in those pots for years and years. Not going to change things as they are doing really well.

Wow!
Now that's a container rose garden!!
Gorgeous Joanne Thumbs up

Do you get new roses each season, aka treat 'em like annuals, or do you over winter somehow--in that greenhouse maybe, or a little of both?

Re: the mag-sulfate and fertilizer--if I were to grow roses in containers with potting soil, yes I'd be on board and everything I said in the other thread about epsom salts in my area would be irrelevant *Blush*

Enjoyed your article very much, Thank You. I have grown miniature roses in pots for the last 10 years or so. I most likely have around 70-80 bushes. When one becomes out of balance able to move and work much closer with it. Your Roses look just out of this world as well as your over all landscape. Thumbs up

Thanks Everyone! Our cool nights help the roses, but our extreme dry/windy conditions don't. No matter where your garden is, there are always obstacles. Thumbs up

Nope! There are many "prettier" gardens here, BUT it is always in the eyes of the beholder. My style is not for everyone, but I like it since it is my own. When we moved in to this house 15 years ago and there was one daylily and a cornflower plant, which I thought was a stubborn weed. My, have things changed

It is completely subjective, I agree, but I would bet that I would call it the prettiest garden in Calgary. It's just the style I love.

Here's what I do for winter protection. If I don't have time to dig them in, I do treat them as annuals. It make is easy for my Husband to shop for my B-Day Rolling on the floor laughing

This year, I'm experimenting with wintering over a few large pots in my greenhouse. The canes still look very green, but time will tell if that was enough protection.

Does that lovely mauve rose over on the far right side of the article have a name?

Ah! I had one of those for a couple of years, but it didn't survive where I had it planted. Never looked like yours, tho! Going to have to try one again in a better spot. Thanks!

That is one that I treat as an annual. I buy it at the Calgary Rose Society rose sale at our garden show in April

Joanne, I used to grow a lot of beautiful tea roses when we lived on Van Island. I tried growing the hardier cultivars when we moved here 12 years ago but they didn't survive the long cold winter, and I am not one that wants to fuss a lot with plants so I gave up on them.

It's very dry here in the summer and windy, not much humidity, and very cool nights.
