Forgive me if this topic has been addressed before, but searches on this site and on several others have failed to answer a burning question for me (unless I am searching for the wrong thing, lol!):

Is there a standard order or format to write out the "shorthand" statistics of a cultivar on a label? Things like height, bloom season, flower size, ploidy and foliage type. For example, is the proper order "44 ML 7.5 dor tet" or is it something else entirely? Is there even an accepted standard format?

How do all of you approach this? It seems like I have seen quite a few styles and formats being used. Just wondering if one way is "better" or "more preferred" than another...

there really is no standard format that I am aware of since everyone puts the info on the labels that they want to see

Mine are very similar to Michele's. I'm in the process of redoing most of them and have decided that I want to put the dip and tet in different label colors.

With my P-touch label maker, I can only do 2 lines if I want to be able to read it. I like tink3472's but that looks like it's done with peel off labels with a printer and pc. .... do they make a label maker that uses such wide tape? Cost of the tape is one of the factors that had me searching for an alternative, but since the labels last forever, I think it all evens out.

I've tried using a laser printer on waterproof labels, but they still fade in my zone 5 garden. In an attempt to come up with something easier to read, I've tried making business card labels, laminating them and then using strong adhesive to attach them to the face plate of a marker. They don't fade, but they fall off more than they stay on for me.

After trial and error, I have gone back to the P-touch .... I have some labels that are over 10 years old that are still legible.

The markers in tink3472's post is what I use the most, but am gradually changing over the display beds to Kincaid Stainless Steel plant markers. (I get the P style) I love them! http://www.kincaidgardens.com/ They offer a discount program to daylily clubs.

I bought 10 packs of these from them. Planning to improvise to cut cost.

Kathy they do make labelers that can take tape I believe up to 1 inch. That's what I have been using as I redo things. I'm also toying with the idea of moving to stainless markers so I will definitely check out the ones you recommended.

And I did use the PTouch labeler (I think mine is the 2700) and use the 1" tape. I usually buy my tape from ebay or amazon so it's a bit cheaper; not always though. I try and keep an eye out a few months before I know I need it so I can have time to find the deals. I have gotten the tape for as little as $9.00 by checking amazon and ebay.

I think my labeler takes 1" tape also.

I usually buy my p-touch label tape on amazon too. It is usually the best price and I usually have enough other things I need to get the free shipping too.

I have been using a P-touch for years now. I buy my tape from ptouchdirect.com They have weekly specials. Their regular prices are about half of what I would pay in a retail store.

Joe, they may be cheaper than the retail but more than I bought mine for. My 3/4 inch cost just under ten dollars. TZE 241 3/4

I don't see the model number on my Ptouch, but it does say up to 3/4". I buy the 1/2" at Costco, reasonably and convenient for me. Is the 1" laminated and water resistant?

Before I start printing my new labels, I better do some research .... my eyes sure aren't what they use to be and I'd love to use a larger font. ;)

Keeping my current label maker and moving up to 3/4" may be a good option for me.
