This little patch of red leaf lettuce is all that remains in our salad box garden.

10 days ago we found a female Gambrel's Quail's nest with 5 eggs in it right in the middle of the lettuce. Everyday since she has returned to the nest and deposited another egg. Now there are 15 eggs and I'm pretty sure that she's about to sit now.

We had the same thing happen last year in the beets. I don't know if quail return to the same area to nest each year. Anyway, we're granting her squatters rights on the lettuce until she's hatched her brood.

So sweet. May your garden remain a peaceful habitat for the covey. My Bert quite disturbed a newly hatched bunch of quail babies last year. I wish he were here still to see some new babies.

I hope there aren't many cats around. They take the baby quail population down quickly. I think 2 survived last year here, but that's pretty fair production. I'm sure they lay so many eggs in the hope that a few will survive. I wish those little bits of chenille that people call baby quail a lotta luck!

Dan,
These little quail chicks should be in college by now! How did the nest do over the last few weeks?

As of yesterday she was still sitting. Shouldn't be much longer now!

13 of the 15 eggs hatched on Friday. Momma and babies skedaddled quickly and did not present a photo opportunity.
