I went to the subject orchid event this morning and thought I would run into Melanie but she wasn't there. I had taken my Dendrobium spectabile over there on Friday night for a display and they entered it for judging. I was delighted to see that I had won another blue ribbon. When it rains it pours, just ask Ted and Carol.

Here are some of the plants that caught my eye:

Great pictures and good to see additional pics with labels. I just have to take the time to go to an orchid show soon. My wife says she "needs" a vacation, even if it is only a long weekend.

Lovely photos, Jim. So glad to see the show, since we won't make it up there today. My back is killing me after misbehaving yesterday trying to clean the pond out.

That last orchid picture is of a Cochlezella orchid. Have any of you grown one of those? I really like the flower and I may give it a go.

Ahh, the synonym is Cochleanthes! Yes, I enjoyed one of those (species, not this hybrid ) for a couple of years, great flowers!! Then it dimped on me. Your conditions are different, I would give it a shot.

It's really adorable, looks kind of like a Russian dancer with fancy purple pants on. A gentleman dancer to keep company with all the dancing ladies?

I thought those leaves belonged to another tropical plant, not an orchid's leaves.

No way, Jim. Smiling It is a different plant, many times used as filler in exhibits like that, the name escaped me right now. If you look closely at your picture you'll see some of the leaves belonging to the orchid peeking out.

I agree I think the "cover-up" foliage is often used adjacent to the orchid plants to enhance the overall eye-appeal. I should also know what that plant is, since I have seen it numerous times and is often for sell in big-box stores.

So right, Ken and Ursula. See, I'm not the only one who thinks orchids don't have the nicest foliage.

Sometimes there are beautiful flowers on a plant that looks pretty bad, so i don't blame them for that little cheat.

I always think that you can't place orchids that close together in an exhibit to have a good display, so that's where those filler plants come in.
Some vendors might set up displays using showy pots and keeping them separate for a more minimalistic look, just letting the plants shine ( as a straight Paph or Phal or Neofinetia grouping), most of the time the exhibitors seem to strive for the natural look?

I guess we could use a new thread showing interesting looking orchids? Distichous growth, those with patterned leaves etc? What do you think?

Yep, that's why they do it. All for aesthetics. As far as I know, only the Jewell orchids have nice foliage, and many of those are grown mainly for the foliage, not for the flowers.

I looked at those leaves while at the show and thought it was a type of cordyline. As I looked closer, I thought the orchid spike was coming from one of its stems. It sure fooled me.

If it fooled you, I would say that the presentation was extremely well done.
