This is what I know this as. From Van Engelen as a species. It isn't in the Database? Didn't find any info that indicates its been reclassified.

Wow, that sure is a beauty! I searched the Catalogue of Life and the Plant List as well as ITIS ... all returned no results. I hope someone comes along with an answer.

I wonder why it isn't recognized by the Catalogue of Life or Kew, etc.? I will go to the plant database forum and provide a link here and maybe one of the Admin's will add it to our database since it seems to be a legitimate plant!

It's a peculiar name. It can't be a species name because the "jonquilla" and "simplex" would have to be separated by f., subsp, or var. It's possible, I suppose, that Simplex is the cultivar name of a Narcissus jonquilla. @jmorth is the authority on these. Let's see what he has to say.

Narcissus jonquilla is a well known species of daffodil and there is an entry for it in the database here:

Species Daffodil (Narcissus jonquilla)

The "simplex" part is a pseudoscientific made up name, which is pretty common in the nursery trade. They get plants that show some different trait(s) than standard plants so they create a name that helps them sell these "different" plants separately. But, the names aren't scientifically valid and they usually don't even meet the loosest definition of a cultivar either. The most common example of this is tacking "albus" or "alba" onto white flowered plants in species that usually produce colored flowers.

Sorry for delayed response, a situation prevented my availability; thanks Kent, your explanation kind of dovetails into the Old House Gardens note on same.
Old House Gardens considers Simplex to be a naming to modern Dutch forms of an old heirloom named Early Louisiana. Dutch growers have appended names like Sweeties, Cologne Bottle, and Simplex to their 'modern' renditions. The original daffodil, Early Louisiana bloomed much earlier than these newer simulations.
In my humble opinion, Old House Gardens is quite knowledgeable , especially concerning heirloom daffodils.
Nothing that's been done can ever be changed.

All of the photos, including this one, I have taken within the Hamilton Square section of Sacramento's city cemetery. It is a perennial garden where I volunteer as a member of the Sacramento Perennial Plant Club. Its about an acre. There is also the Historic Rose Garden and a Native Plants Garden. Many plots have been adopted and planted. I plan to submit photos of all the perennials in HamiltonSquare which number over 400 during 2014 as they each come to there glory. glad you enjoyed the Photo. Here is another long view of the Hamilton Square perennial garden.

Leslie, thank you so much for the great history lesson. I can wait to see the new photos. What a wonderful place to do volunteer work.
