I know, it's a weird thing. It does look like a cane, but there's no sign of buds or leaves coming. We shall see, I'm sure.

Maybe the two doses of cool weather has confused the poor thing . . .

You got me on that, Elaine. Let us know what happens. Dendrobium is not my primary family of plants, far from it, but I have never seen that phenomena before.

Or it coulb be an extra long bloom spike, and the sheath covers are shedding off. Reminded me of my old Den smilliae...initially looked like a young cane then turns out it was the bloom spike.

Elaine, I have that same Dendro. Mine is a keiki off a much bigger one that had a bazillion keikis. I bought it from a guy who bought his original plant from Tropiflora. He didn't have a tag and I forgot what he said the name was...but he said it makes huge cascades of flowers in the spring. I'll email him and ask!

Discovered something very odd looking within this Phal. I first saw the 'white', and thought it may have been a piece of the orchid bark mix, or perlite, but upon closer inspection...hmmm...what is it? Shrug!

Generally, everything ends up being an inflorescence, so that's my guess. Sticking tongue out You'll know more in a few days.

Elaine, that's not what I have I don't think. Sad I don't what WHAT I have! My plant is doing the same cane thing. Here's a pic of it.

What am I looking for here, Kate? I see lots of old canes. I see you used your coconut fiber matting.

Kate, it's certainly a Dendrobium similar to mine, and the cane/stem is the same. I'm thinking in spring we may see leaves on them i.e. probably new canes.

Tara, my eyes aren't all that great, but I'd look at that little growth with a magnifying glass and a pair of sharp tweezers. The white thing on top looks like it could be a bug to me. Mealy bug, maybe? You could 'test' it very gently with something like a needle or pin to see if it's soft. If it is, it's a bug. My Phals are starting to pop some stems and they're firm, shiny and green on top, not white.

That reminds me, the guy did say that the leaves fall off the stems in winter. So basically it will be a bunch of sticks with roots. How's that for interesting non-flower growth? Rolling my eyes.

Ken, I'm not sure what I'm looking at half the time so I have no idea..but everyone seems to like their mats, at least! The orchids I have from your nursery have lots of new growth.

Good news, Kate. They probably feel more at home in Florida than they do in Mississippi. Sighing!

Thanks, Ken, and Elaine. When I saw this I scratched at it lightly, thinking it to be a piece of the medium. It is certainly hard, but Elaine, as you suggested, I will look much closer at it later today. I have 2 other Phals that are producing spikes, and that is what caused me to question this one. Those other 2 spikes look very 'normal'...Exactly what you'd expect a spike to look like. None of this 'white crust'... Thank You! both! I tip my hat to you.
