If you're running over with the herb production I always (recommend) using ALL of the herbs you love in salad. I'd just as soon have selective herbs as greens in salad as lettuce....

We're eating cilantro in our salads, on our tacos, in scrambled eggs and last night in Ray's Cilantro Rice. Not to mention the occasional bowl of salsa!

Dan, I'm convinced that cilantro is just an overexuberant weed! The only problem with it is that just when you really want lots of salsa, chips and cold beer, it bolts. I may try again to grow some in the summer, but it's so cheap, I don't think it's worth it, really.

That's a beautiful bed. I need to get busy and build a couple.

Forgot to ask: Has anyone grown stevia? I picked up a couple of pretty plants at Target and now I'm not sure if I should put them in the ground somewhere or pot them. Sun? Shade?

This weekend I planted starts of Italian Parsley, Cilantro, Chives, Dill, Greek Oregano and some Thyme. I grow my own lettuce.... for the time being Glare , and love fresh herbs in my poached salmon salad I take to work for lunch. I'm hopeful... the Thrashers haven't found them yet... been 24 hrs. No afternoon sun and in the ground. We'll see! Thumbs up

Good Luck! Set an unbaited mouse trap or two in the herbs. The thrashers will get the message soon enough.

I am growing several herbs now, since someone from DG Texas gardening convinced me that herbs are great and easy in hot dry climates and not funny about soil, so much, in many cases.

I have several herbs growing, the ones that are going nuts are my Cat Mints. Pink Rosemary, chili varieties, cilantro from seed, chocolate mint, fennel. Maybe a couple of others. I lost one already, but can not remember what it was, but it is fussy, I heard.

That's how it works. Happy to help. Maybe just suggesting I'll give you some will work.

Hi Dawn I am so glad to see you here!! I have just started trying to grow some herbs.
I planted basil, coconut time and lemmon time. the last two were pretty much just because I like the smell of their crushed leaves. I ahve never really used fresh herbs in cooking so I have a lot to learn.

It does smell wonderful at least to me. My daughter thinks it stinks she does not like the smell of coconut.

Oh I need to find some of that coconut thyme Marie. I am coming out in November for the race.
I am finding herbs nice to grow and I am excited by the smell of the plants. I wish the flowering period for some was better and that they did better in shade than they are doing in my shade spots. Do you know if some flower in the shade or part shade?

Now that fall is approaching (I think), what herbs are you planting - or planning to plant - now?

I love growing herbs so I'm reviving this thread!

Yesterday, I got my borage, feverfew, german chamomile, lemon balm, romanesco basil, and dark opal basil planted in cells. It took me all afternoon because I kept being distracted by my garden calling out to me for a visit. I've already planted a lot of basil in the ground but I need lots more to go into pots so I can bring them in when fall arrives. I don't have enough pots yet for all the seeds I planted, but I will definitely be foraging for some more containers before they are ready to transplant.

I also planted my goji berry seeds and some marigolds. Not a big fan of marigolds but they are beneficial plants for many edibles so they will get some prime real estate in several places. I try to be careful to yield some garden space to companion plants for my edibles so they will thrive.

I'm still missing some herbs I want to grow. One of my neighbors promised me some cilantro seeds yesterday that I will plant with my melons. Tarragon is still needed. They make great companions for eggplants and I will be growing several eggplants and want them to be very happy.
