The nursery up the road from me grows their A. bulbifer in the ground in full blazing sun. They leave in the ground year round here. It get's huge. I'm saving a bulb from mine and plan on putting it in the ground. I'm not sure but I don't think they do anything in particular for it tho it's in good draining soil.

I do have some which have yet to flower which are probably A. konjac, they keep increasing so I had to repot them with the result I had too many pots. I've kept them in a cold greenhouse in pots over winter, some have rotted in cold winters but I kept some inside too. I know I had some growing last year, they are very slow here as we rarely have any real warm weather. Last year they didn't thrive at all, winter went on for too long, missed spring and summer was cool for most of the time. I didn't thrive either. Hilarious!

This last winter I have had to keep them all in the greenhouse, including other tender plants which I have always brought inside, luckily last winter wasn't too harsh but I have lost some plants. We have been having a complete downstairs renovation due to being flooded near the end of 2012, it takes time to dry the bricks then it's a slow job getting the building work done! I had to keep them in the greenhouse as the spare room I have upstairs was full of stuff from downstairs.

I've almost had enough of lugging plants inside for winter, then lugging them out again, so any losses might be gratefully accepted. There's far too much work involved trying to grow plants here which don't really want to grow here so I'm trying to downsize and make do with what I have in the garden. I had many, many bulbs of all sorts which survived quite hard winters in the greenhouse but along came a once in around 20 years extremely hard winter which killed most off. Sad it is, I had some beauties, oh well, been there done that. Hilarious!

You have some amazing spathes there Evan, I'm jealous! Rolling on the floor laughing I should have some still surviving but they will only just be thinking about waking up.

Thanks for your info Janet, it's always useful to have UK insight. I'm in the process of moving (mortgage pending - fingers crossed) so everything I've done this spring has gone into pots or containers. The new garden will need a lot of work so I'm not expecting to be planting anything out this Summer.
I'm so sorry to hear about your flooding, it must have been awful Group hug , but good to hear that you are getting the renovations done.

I LOVE ATP and I've made so many friends with lovely folks from all around the world, but there does seem to be a derth of Brits here, or maybe I'm not looking in the right places, I tend to hang out on the Sempervivum threads mostly.

Kate, the weather here is the likely reason so few nurseries sell this type of bulb or corm. I've spent several years collecting everything desirable, it can be fun but in the end the weather beats you unless you have plenty of suitable places to keep such plants in pots, and if you can afford the heating to keep them happy! Then of course there is all the extra work, it's difficult enough tidying up the garden in the short spells of good weather we get.

I have a large garden, and I'm lucky to have bought before the big boom in prices. I developed the garden into several beds, now it has evolved with those plants which are happy in sandy acidic soil and which are very hardy. I have plants which set themselves about such as hardy Geraniums, Veronica, Linaria purpurea and believe it or not, single dahlias I grew from seed which not only survive but set about and thrive. Flowering shrubs along with good ground cover plants are what I am now happy with, the exotic plants of past have had to take a back seat.

If you manage to get your dream home Kate, my advice is to use plants which native bees and insects will be able to feed on, you will be doing your bit to help nature as nature intended it. My insects love Ragwort, Tansy, white and red clover, dandelions and other wildflowers such as Mouse-ear Hawkweed (Pilosella officinarum) which is happily spreading in my 'lawn' along with clover. The ground was poor and full of moss until I started to leave the grass to grow as it should with very little mowing, now it's looking healthy. I have some nice dandelions along the southern side of a hedge, they feed bees early in the year and actually look much nicer than having a boring 'well kept' strip.

Of course there is always the desire to try plants which look exotic, we have to experiment to satisfy our plant lust, when you are done with that go back to basics. Many of the shrubs such as Rhododendron (if you are on acidic soil) and hardy Camellias of which I have a few are as exotic as any plants.

The flood has been a distressing experience, it wasn't a natural flood but the fault of the water company for switching off sewage pumps at a nearby large institution. The advantages are, a refurbishment was needed which we didn't have to do although there's always jobs you have to do yourself, and we now have all new kitchen 'white goods' and kitchen cupboards. I have spent a lot of money on upgrading and getting new things to match the replacements, we are nearing the end! Then the upstairs needs doing. Hilarious!

Where are all these Brits? Psssst, I'm not one of them! Rolling on the floor laughing

How do you folks grow Voodoo Lily (Sauromatum venosum)? I've been growing in mostly shady situations but I recently read that most Sauromatum occur naturally in a sunny habitat. I know you grow quite a few different species for you breeding work @LariAnn. Any advice?

I grow my breeding stock in partial sun - I'm guessing that full sun in summer would be too much for them. What you need to watch out for on Sauromatum is mites - they love these plants for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I don't have that problem with my Typhoniums, which are similar to Sauromatum, as you know., Evan.

As for habitat, one must remember that in the tropics, "full sun" may be more like what we would call "partial sun" due to the intermittent cloud cover and sporadic showers. South Florida full sun can be brutal, intense and unrelenting, which is a recipe for plant cooking if they are not from a place that has similar 'full sun".

I hadn't thought of the cloud cover,... LariAnn. I'll site most of them in sunnier situations. Maybe even a few in full sun, which up here, is a whole different thing than summer in South Florida. Thanks for the help.

Dracunculus vulgaris are popping up. I was worried they were a bit early but they look fine.

Arisaema sikokianum Silver Center has put up a bloom from a small tuber.

Anchomanes difformis var. welwitschii, yes the spines are sharp. I was told to plant like a caudiciform, with the top exposed.

I love that Cobra Lily! I just checked this afternoon and my Konjac are still comatose .. the soil temperature is only in the upper 60's to low 70's .. I'm thinking Amorphophallus wants hot soil to break dormancy. I might put one of them on a heating pad just to see what happens.

I like that Cobra Lilly too ! It however wouldn't like living here.

Anne,
Do you have any of those 12x12 stepping/patio stones ? Try setting the pot on one of those in the sun. I've found this works great for waking up the sleepy heads.

MJ, we had a cold front move through last night (2 inches of rain in the gauge!). When I got up this morning it was 52 degrees and the high for today will be in the low to mid 70's .. Not complaining too much because I am able to turn off the a/c - it was in the 90's until yesterday. I think the nights for the next 5 days will be too cold no matter what I put them on unless it's a heating pad.
