I tossed all the seeds from a cantaloupe in the back of the yard, covered with dirt and am watering it a little. May do nothing or I may have a bumper crop. I LOVE Cantaloupe!

Make sure you keep the soil moist until they germinate. They can withstand a little drought once they get bigger, but they prefer a good dose of water... I have Minnesota Midget and Hale's Best growing right now.

Okay...I didn't even dry out the seeds but I am watering them twice a day. Worth a try. Do they take over a yard like watermelon do?

They certainly can - lol. But you can sort of train the vines to go where you want them to go!

I put cantaloupe in my compost. One year, at my old house, I scattered the compost. Actually had a few edible cantaloupes grow from that "happy mistake".

Little shocked here: This morning I found this on Day 3!

I made a little tent for it...it will get morning sun and very very late afternoon sun. I was afraid to allow the sun to cook it before it gets growing.

Kelly? Susie?

Love the shoes! Just keep those little guys watered - they'll grow in no time. Provide as much pm shade as possible.

My makeshift shade structure. I am keeping a table cloth over it so there is not afternoon sun shining on the seedlings.

Can you guess this is my first melon.....or fruit ever grown? Rolling on the floor laughing

LOL - good job MelonMommy! Once they get their first set of true leaves you're gonna want to thin to maybe a couple plants. The vines get pretty big!

Here is what they might become...

This is a Hale's Best cantaloupe direct seeded 3/21 - almost ready to harvest and devour...

And this is my friend Minnesota Midget - these are awesome! Baseball to softball sized, they are sweet with almost no rind. These will slip from the vine when ripe!

Day 6
No "true" leaves but they are getting big! Yummy! How long till I get fruit? Rolling on the floor laughing

Kelly, yours are beautiful! The one from the grocery that these are offspring from look like the top photo. So it sounds like the cantaloupes are about 3 months away for me to enjoy eating.

Do I fertilize at some point? Cover with sheets? WHAT??????
