I really don't do envy but I think I covet your shutter succulents. Current pics when you have time?

I just received my first sempervivium and have no idea if I spelled it correctly. I will just call in a semp. They are so unbelievably cute in person....now I know why everyone loves them.
Thumb of 2011-08-05/Boopaints/43f6fe

Brenda, I'd like to do a shutter in the spring for all the various purslane cuttings I can borrow. Wouldn't that be amazing??? Can you give me a how to since I am a visual person?

My coleus I received a couple of weeks ago are doing fantastic! I only lost 2 and that was right away. I'm painting geckos for the giver...bartering is fun!

These were rooting so I put them in soil and they are happy. % others weren't rooted but are now...they are in water.
Thumb of 2011-08-05/Boopaints/afd391

Last on the balcony are my 2 new purslane...gosh, I love this plant. It is an amazing morning brightener! Because my balcony faces east, they bloom all day long....a first for me since I'd always grown them in full sun. At 5:49pm I still had a few blooms but most had closed.

Thanks my friends! Group hug

Yes, the hummers love it and so do I. I miss major gardening but school begins in 2 weeks and I will not have the time to garden that I once had. Saving me lots of money too. Hurray!

Boo, your balcony is looking great! The thing with the shutter living wall is that the plants can't be too resentful about being smushed in at first. I would do mine differently if I did it again... as I was learning as I went, I made it more difficult on myself. I will try to put together a tutorial, but unless I make another living wall photos might be missing...

Boo, loved seeing your garden and inspiring ideas!! (by the way, better check your spelling for 'Calibrachola', unless it's a latino gang version Big Grin )

Brenda, I had seen that shutter idea in a magazine somewhere and really want to eventually do one too, I like yours a lot, the vibrant blue really makes it pop!

And Susie brought up that picture of one of the best threads on DG! If I remember correctly, that gorgeous patio was submitted by a guy you was a trucker, he answered lots of questions between his stretches of travel and showed pictures of how it looked in the winter too but he eventually disappeared and that thread just took on a life of it's own, eventually going to a part 2. It still gets bumped so new ones can enjoy it too.

Hi Becky, lurking around for a while. Your mentioned hydroponics, that is growing all plants in water. Don't know too much about it, but my friend's son has one going and she said it is doing well. Don't think I'd try that with only having a balcony. Whistling I'll have to really make sure I look at the garden next time we go visiting.

I was so lucky to be able to pick up 3 of those plants at Lowe's on their clearance table. I don't do well with the real names, but they called them "million bells". Got one "cherry pink", one "terra cotta" and one "yellow" all for 80 cents a pot. So far they are doing well in hangings baskets, seems the cherry pink one is doing the best. I'm only letting them have a little sun, full sun didn't agree with them.

So, life has certainly changed since I had a garden and now a balcony but I'm wising up and soon will hire a handy man to do a little construction in my off the patio laundry area and hang some heavy duty hooks for plants.

Susie and I went to Summer Winds on Friday and I bought 3 new coleus to add to my ever growing collection plus a dark ornamental sweet potato called Sweet Caroline. It was blooming the pretties light lavender flowers...a first for me. I'll take a photo later today! Big Grin

The black OSPV is called Sweet Caroline. I've never seen one with blooms and sure hope I continue getting them!

The coleus, poor things, had no name tags. All are doing great outside, east facing.
