Growing Tomatoes with Free-Standing Hog Panel, Straw, and Bale Twine

By RavenCroft
April 2, 2014

My method of using hog panel provides easy access and super support for tomatoes, squash, beans, and gourds alike. I also pile on the straw for moisture retention and weed control.

Yes, but the photos wouldn't enlarge when I clicked on them. My eyes are aging and detail is lost unless I am right up on it. Great idea, though. Thumbs up

I had the same experience. Dunno why the photos won't enlarge. Maybe Dave can figure it out. Glad you like my method. It saves a lot of time & work.

I have a touch screen tablet, and the photos enlarge, but are out of focus. That doesn't help any, does it? Great idea, @RavenCroft!

Photos in articles don't usually enlarge if the article is done in the "Advanced form" rather than the "Easy form" where you upload photos directly from your computer rather than drag and drop.

I fixed the images in the article and they now expand properly when clicked on.

This is a great article, and the technique is great. Every year we use a few panels in exactly this manner to grow tomatoes. The panels down here are approximately $18 each at Tractor Supply.

I had to pop back in here and let you know how very pleased I am with how well this is working out for me. I'm simply amazed at the amount of produce I've been able to grow and harvest in two areas just 12" wide by 8' long!
Thumb of 2014-08-03/chelle/986550

There are two types of beans in the closest area, and beans and cucumbers in the other space. My ornamental grasses and flowers are quite happy growing behind, amongst and between these as well. This space and step-saving method is fabulous! Thanks again!

I did this with fence stakes, and wire fencing that we removed to open up a pasture. It's not as neat as paneling, but much cheaper.
