Well, I thought I responded to this. Apparently not. I believe it's a Cephalocereus. Sometimes it's so difficult to tell about the older specimens.

I garden for the pollinators.

Thanks Tee, after looking at lots of photo's I was leaning towards C. senilis but I don't know a thing about cacti.

From googling for cactus at Balboa Park I found mention of Old Man Cactus, C. senilis in a couple of places but I have so much trouble comparing photo's and don't know cactus at all. This is one of the things that came up while googling: http://www.projectnoah.org/spo...
