I photographed this tree/shrub in East Texas yesterday. Anyone recognize it?

Could it be Forestiera pubescens? https://www.google.com/search?...

Just a wild guess on my part because I'm really not good at comparing photo's.

Very close, but not it. Forestiera has opposite leaves and this one has alternate.

The foliage looks like Persea Americana ..

That takes me to the family Lauraceae. Scroll to the photos at the bottom, look at Lindera megaphylla which is close, not sure about the flowers though.

Lindera megaphylla is an evergreen Tree growing to 10 m (32ft 10in).
It is hardy to zone 8. It is in leaf 12-Jan. The flowers are dioecious (individual flowers are either male or female, but only one sex is to be found on any one plant so both male and female plants must be grown if seed is required)The plant is not self-fertile.

Could the sex of the tree be the difference in flowers?

I didn't notice any smell and I sure as heck didn't taste a plant that I had not identified. But I believe that ID is correct. Thanks Janet.

I tip my hat to you.

It is an attractive tree, one you might not expect to be so hardy! Great for wildlife too.

Oh, so glad you got an exact ID on that lovely tree ... cute common name "Sweet Horsesugar"! Thumbs up

Here's the link to it in our database: Sweetleaf (Symplocos tinctoria)
