I was very fortunate that did not lose any daylily plants planted outside. That includes the 165 double fans I received from Maryott's the first week of October. I planted the fans without dividing, mulched with dry leaves and pine needles. It took me three weeks to plant them all because by I am a working woman.

Of course, all 256 potted plants in the cool greenhouse look great. I divided most double fans, and these grew well and are growing another fan. The dormants went dormant for three months. For most of the time, the temperature was just 40°. I did not add any light.

During the next few weeks, I will start to move pots to a very sheltered outdoor location where I will cut back the foliage. This location is sheltered from wind and sun, and by Mother's Day, most should be ready to be planted in the ground.

Meanwhile, new fans will start arriving in less than two weeks, and these will be potted and will go in the greenhouse until early June. These will stay potted until next spring, and, yes, the will spend the winter in the cool greenhouse.

I feel for everyone's lost daylilies. Group hug
Not to complain, simply to commiserate, here are my RIPs so far:

Bar code ( had since 2011)
Blue Viper ( single fan, had since 2012)
Catherine Irene ( planted last fall)
Hillbilly heart ( had since 2011)
Larry's Obsession ( had it since 2012)
Little maiden ( planted last fall)
Magical mystery show (planted last fall)
Mandatory evacuation (had since 2010 but moved last year)
Tooth and nails (had since 2012)
Tusk (planted last fall, contacted seller but only to try and buy it again)

All were planted in the ground and looked good last fall
I have several others that may not make it but I will not jinx them by naming them yet.
Lost fans on many. Thumbs down
Tomorrow I will check the side garden - fingers crossed they have made it.

Lisa

I'm the most in mourning for two of my best toothy seedlings, since they cannot be replaced. I also lost about 25 registered daylilies in pots. I've ordered replacements for Bullfrog Kisses, Jeanne Deaver's Dream, Lake Tahoe Autumn, Melee, and Pink Aloha.

My utmost sympathies for those who have lost plants, especially those
which cannot be replaced. That must be heart breaking. It certainly would
be for me. Now, if I can get new arrivals through a few more possible
freezes, maybe I can relax. These daylilies can certainly cause some stress.
Of course, that would not be the case if we didn't love them so much, and
also considering the funds spent.

I have grown daylilies in pots for 20 years and this is the first time I have ever lost any due to the weather, I consider myself lucky when I think of all the farmers that have lost everything due to no rain over the past couple of years. Anytime we plant something we are at the mercy of Mother Nature and she's not getting any kinder. The real thing that bothers myself is having to tell people they will not be getting something they have been expecting for several months. Most really want their daylilies and not a refund because they had plans for using them in one form or another.
On a lighter note, I have scape's everywhere which are well over a month late, the upside is I will see daylilies blooming later in the year than normal.

I'm right there with you Fred. I hate telling people they won't be getting their plants that some have been waiting for since September. I am actually very fortunate that James Hall didn't lose nearly as many as me because his were divided early so they were much bigger by the time we got the freezes and the sleet/snow and the single digit temps plus I think his area was a bit more protected than mine being blocked by trees on one side.

James is being very generous and letting me take his extra plants he has not sold to try and replace the ones I lost so I don't have to give as many refunds. Thumbs up I will pay for it in the long run with lots of work I'm sure Blinking but it's worth it. There are some I had that he didn't or he was already sold out and I will have to give refunds for those.

Mother Nature can be sooooooo cruel but not much can be done.

It's still early here but from what I've seen so far I've only lost seedlings (and very few at that ) that were in a raised bed. Even a large number of the seedlings right along the edge of the beds seem ok. We had the same extreme cold many of you did but where I live we are fortunate to have heavy snowfall (average 4.5 ft. this year) which is the best insulating blanket a garden can have. I'm very lucky with the daylilies but all the water runoff will probably rot a lot of my lilies this year.

As soon as I start cleaning up my gardens, which I plan on starting today, I will know more about which plants I lost. It is a bit too early here as a lot of the dormants don't break dormancy this early.

However, good news on some of my very small seedlings that I over wintered in pots. I just took a chance on those. They are ones I did not get planted. It appears most of the diploids made it. Not sure on the tets yet. I did a little experiment. I filled the pots with mulch, covering the 2" seedlings and laid the pots on their side underneath my blue spruce tree. I then buried all of the pots with approximately 2" of mulch. With the good snow cover along with the mulch, it must have insulated my babies enough to keep them alive.

Been working out in the yard doing clean up and the daylilies, what I have seen so far, seem to be doing good. I was worried about Larry's Obsession after I saw that Lisa lost hers this winter. I see a hint of green on mine so hopefully it made it. Taking a little snack break to rest my back a bit. Already filled one can with yard waste and starting on #2.

Had to edit this to say I think I may have lost Bella Isabella. I hope not. I am hoping it is early yet for any signs of life from that one. I got that one because my niece is named Isabella.

Hurray! glad your Larry's Obsession has green Cindy!

So many freeze and thaws this winter- we had lots of snow but none that stayed and gave a protective insulation. Bet ones I lost, did better north of here if they had a snow cover that stayed.

Checked side garden so my RIP list now includes

Pencil Thin Mustache ( planted 2012)
Hot pink Fury ( planted last fall)

Also lost some echinacea ( milkshake and southern belle)

Hi All-

I live in NY and have been cleaning up everything today as the weather was BEAUTIFUL!! 65! I will take it! Tomorrow and Monday its suppose to get into the 70s. About a week ago I was really worried that I lost 3 plants, well today, upon further/closer inspection, I moved back a lot of the dead leaves from last year and they MADE IT! Green shoots sticking up. There was one lily that my uncle gave me last year, and I thought that was dead, NOPE, tons of new growth!

There are two that I am crossing my fingers will still live, but I was REALLY surprised and excited to see they made it! The one I am not sure about yet is Jungle Island. I bought that last year from Spunky1 and it was HUGE by the end of the summer. I am hoping it pulled through and with the warmer temps for the next two days I am hoping to see new growth.

Needless to say, I was surprised IN A GOOD WAY today! Now, I have to fix my vegetable seeds that I killed as I tried to create a mini-greenhouse for them, didn't realize it was super moist, and yes, I probably drowned them! I am going to give them a few more days to dry out and see if anything happens, then out to the compost pile they will go! LIVE AND LEARN!

Regards, Josh

Glad you mentioned this about the ProMix being too wet. I've noticed this too.

All of my daylilies are up and growing here. Looks like I lost 2 this year. Foxy lady, which has struggled sense I got it 2 years ago. Never saw a bloom. And All in All which I've had for a long time and had always done well. I'll be replacing All in All. I really enjoyed that one.

Hi there Josh!

I trimmed my day lilies (sorry, my autocorrect continues to make daylily - plural, into two words and I don't always catch it) last fall, which I rarely do. But I don't think it will stop some of the rot that may be developing. Warm dry temps, followed by lotsa rain, and now cold temps..... I have been removing as much of the leftover dead foliage as possible and removing some of the dead leaves I lightly mulched with last fall. On the other hand I don't want to remove too much because we are still getting down into the 20's at night and I want to protect the more sensitive stuff from the cold....

A conundrum for sure.

I am hoping that this massive rain we had last night ( we needed it) and maybe some warmer temperatures in the future, (not this week, temps in the 30's the next 3-4 days) will help wake up anything that may still be hiding. I am seeing more and more greening up from some.

And it looks like my yellow peony survived, not sure if my chocolate or coral one did yet. Iris are still being slow to green up. My losses in that bed might approach 50% but I am still hoping. As for my digitalis, I think I have lost them, again. I think I am done with that flower Crying
