Unfortunately I had two factors working against me. We lost our home last fall and were forced to leave rather abruptly in November. The daylilies and irises were dug up and brought to the new house in pots, and I foolishly thought they'd be okay until spring. I. WAS. WRONG. The irises WERE fine, the daylilies suffered a horrible rotting death. Given how hardy the plants have always been, I just never dreamed it could happen.

(btw thanks for the welcome, everyone!)

Oh, yes, well, that would make a big difference. Maybe they were not rotted, in the typical rot, but frozen to death, making them mushy.

When you listed Spiritual Corridor, I wondered what must have gone wrong, as it should have lived through an Ohio winter, since it was hybridized in Ohio.

Sorry, I forget to say Welcome!

Edited to correct my iPad auto spell correct... It's not perfect...!

Tiny bit of happy news. I finally decided to discard my rotten, freeze-mushed daylilies and I found one had a tiny shoot growing out of it. ONE MORE SURVIVOR!!! Got that baby in the ground, watered it and did a little happy dance! Hurray!

Hurray! Hurray! Hurray!

I'm trying to save what I can. I think I may lose a couple more but there are others that are fighting. And I will fight with them.

The year I overwintered in pots, every single one mushed up and rotted. Now if I ever do it again I know to turn those pots on their side.

I have a few that are still ify, they may yet rot. I might try to save some if they are still alive later this week when I might be able to get outside and do some digging. Yabba Dabba Do and Medicine Feather are looking rough.

And Bullfrog Kisses is definitely gone, not even a hint of life.

I have some others that are missing in action, I just haven't bothered to dig out my garden maps and figured out which ones yet. I will admit that I see a bit more green every day, so some may still show up, but I am 99% certain BK is gone.

Sad

I can send you a fan of BK that has made it through multiple winters here when you're mobile.

I really thought I had lost Marilyn Bradner, but there was the tiniest piece sticking out earlier this week and now it is about 2 inches tall. Yeah!

Thanks James! That is very nice. Not only do I need mobility, but the weather needs to improve. Temps still down in the 30's at night, although I think we might get warmer today ( crossing my fingers). It's warm enough that my daffodils now have buds, which is a step in the right direction.

Jan your weather seems it is about a week behind ours. My daffodils are blooming so yours should start soon. It has been chilly here too. Have had to turn the furnace on at night. My tulips are in bud and they should be blooming soon. Columbine still have a ways to go.

Anna, that's wonderful news! Glad you found a survivor.

Jan, I'm so sorry you lost Bullfrog Kisses. I just love that red and white color combination.

My daffodils are mostly done except for the "fried eggs" (Narcissus 'Geranium'). These have the most wonderful scent! I have vowed to put a start closer to my back door.

Tulips, bleeding hearts, redbud trees have been blooming for about a week. And the columbine is just about ready to open.

I did lose one peony and the other two are pretty spindly. I really thought they were pretty hardy Sad

My yellow peony is about 5 inches high. My other two - a coral and a chocolate - are still hidden under the bark mulch.

I agree, right now I am about a week behind Michigan. My farmer friends are complaining, they need another week to get most of their fields planted and after today we are supposed to get something like 6 days straight of rain. They would be happier if the rain held off a week.

I think temps next week are supposed to be in the 40's. But yesterday turned out nicer than expected. I dug up Yabba Dabba Do because it looked like it could be rotting even though it is in a very well drained and newer bed. Once I got it dug up it didn't look as bad as I thought, so I stuck one of the fans back in the ground there, then brought the other three in for cleaning, to air dry, and then to transplant in a pot for a couple of months. I may just stick it in the garage for the next week to protect it a bit. It's in a sunny windowsill right now. I have a few others on a "watch" but am hoping they survive without intervention. I think the freezes, dampness & cloudy days have done a number on them. There is a section of one bed that may have had some winter loss, but I haven't gotten in there to really check. I hate to uncover things too much because of the cold weather, yet don't want too much mulch on them that they rot. Hopefully I can get in there later this afternoon and see what is what.

My hyacinths have buds!

And my iris that I lost are all on the west side of the house. My east side of the house bed is doing OK. Winter must just have been too cold for some of them. I am still being patient - some it is obvious are gone, nothing left at all, not even a stem or two. Others "might" make it, I can see a spot o' green on a couple. I am not sure I am going to have much of an iris bloom season this year, at least on the west side bed. On the other hand, more room to plant more iris.....

Supposed to rain Monday thru Thursday here next week so I really need to get some garden work done today. Going to be 55 today so that's not bad.

Ya know, I don't mind losing DLs I left potted over the winter. But when I'm weeding a bed, and find TEN labels in the bed with no DLs anywhere near them, it hurts. Sad I don't even want to look and see what I lost - will do that later.

No... the labels had been twisty-tied around the foliage, and all that was left was rotted roots and the labels Thumbs down

Other than what I buy at my local DL meetings, I am NOT buying more DLs until all the ones I have in pots are in the ground.

Who wants to take bets on how long I honor that commitment? Whistling
